While hundreds of people use weight loss medications to help shed extra pounds, a new study shows green tea may help keep weight off. A Penn State Dieting Study shows an extract found in green tea activates the body’s metabolism and helps keep fat from building up. Doctors aren’t suggesting every person on a diet should buy green tea, but the study does offer promising results for the future of dieting.
The “skinny” on the dieting study
“Our results suggest that if you supplement your diet with green tea you gain weight more slowly,” said Joshua Lambert assistant professor of food science in agricultural sciences.
Mice that were fed Epigallocatechin-3-gallate — EGCG — a compound found in most green teas, along with a high-fat diet, gained weight 45 percent more slowly than the control group of mice eating the same diet without EGCG.
Aside from gaining weight slower, Lambert also says the mice used more fat. “There seems to be two prongs to this,” said Lambert. “First, EGCG reduces the ability to absorb fat and, second, it enhances the ability to use fat.
From mice to humans
The tea extract didn’t curb the appetite, or stop the stomach from grumbling, both groups of mice still ate the same amount of food but the way it was broken down in the body differed.
The kicker here is a human would have to drink ten cups of green tea a day to match the amount the mice were getting. While that amount of green tea is a bit much for a person to consume, Lambert says there is evidence that just a cup or two a day may have some benefits.
“Human data — and there’s not a lot at this point — shows that tea drinkers who only consume one or more cups a day will see effects on body weight compared to non consumers,” said Lambert. He plans to continue this research to see what the magic amount of green tea is to maximize weight loss.
