While many of us hate the sound of our alarm clock in the morning, many of us take a good night sleep for granted. If you’ve ever known someone with narcolepsy, you know they can fall asleep on the spot. Narcoleptics don’t have a mental illness or battle too much stress, it’s a nervous system disorder caused by a lack of a certain hormone in the brain. While narcoleptics often feel sleepy every three to four hours, they are also plagued with weight problems. A new study may explain why.
A report holds answers
Orexins, the hormone that narcoleptics don’t have, are rather unique in that they allow one to eat more and lose more at the same time, explained Devanjan Sikder of the Sanford-Burnham Research Institute. “It is a couch potato’s dream.”
Fat comes in one of two types: white or brown. White fat stores calories while brown fat burns them. “It seems a deficiency of the neuropeptide hormone orexin, an ingredient that encourages hunger and wakefulness, may leave them with a lack of energy-burning brown fat,” a report in Cell Metabolism said.
What it all means
Researchers believe this new information will lead to orexin therapy. They hope to give the hormone to those dealing with narcolepsy and see how it affects their weight gain.
The life of a narcoleptic
This bizarre condition has no cure; right now there are only treatments to manage the symptoms. Aside from prescribed medications to keep a person awake, and a few tips to sleep, doctors also suggest making lifestyle changes where possible. Eating light meals and scheduling quick naps around meal times to help curb “sleep attacks,” the sudden urge to sleep.
While the condition is not life threatening, it can put a person in life threatening situations. If a narcoleptic has a “sleep attack” while driving, the results could be deadly. Narcoleptics are more accident prone than most because of their condition.
