Are you the type that needs a cup of coffee to function in the morning? Do you fill a travel mug to go and continue to drink java through the day? You’re not alone. Americans love their coffee, but a new study may have you pouring less in your mug.

Medical News Today says a new study shows drinking high levels of caffeinated coffee increases the chances of vision loss.
The alarming results
Through surveys and eye exams, researchers revealed participants who drank three or more cups daily, were at an increased risk of developing glaucoma, compared to those who didn’t drink any. While researchers believe coffee is connected to the problem, other caffeinated beverages like tea or soda did not carry the same risk.
The inspiration for the study
Researchers were inspired to conduct this study because of a link between the Scandinavian population, their coffee consumption and vision problems.
“Scandinavian populations have the highest frequencies of exfoliation syndrome and glaucoma. Because Scandinavian populations also have the highest consumption of caffeinated coffee in the world, and our research group has previously found that greater caffeinated coffee intake was associated with increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma, we conducted this study to evaluate whether the risk of exfoliation glaucoma or glaucoma suspect may be different by coffee consumption,” researchers stated.
Scientists say more research is needed to understand the connection between coffee and the optic nerve. In the meantime, researchers say it isn’t a bad idea to cut back on your coffee intake.
