It’s that time of year when the holiday get-togethers are flowing with ridiculous amounts of food and drinks.  Thanksgiving is known as a “gorging day,” as many Americans shovel platefuls of turkey into their mouth, wash it down with a little alcohol and work it all off by watching football on the couch.

It’s not easy to break this cycle, but according to Marie Claire “it takes 3,500 excess calories to gain a pound, so you might escape from your holiday feast with little to show for it.”

Still, it’s important to know what you’re up against.  That huge spread of food has quite a few calories lurking inside it.  Before you dive in, check out the calories on your favorite Thanksgiving treats.

A few tips to keep from over eating:

  • Eat before you go, have a little something in the tank that way you won’t pig out
  • Ease up on the alcohol, one or two less beers will help keep the calories down
  • Watch the portions, it’s easy to fill the plate and then feel obligated to finish
  • Minimize the munching, avoid the snacks before hand and enjoy the main course
