Is your sex life in a major rut? Many couples, especially couples that have been together for a long time, seem to repeat performances. The same foreplay, the same positions, the same place. Sound like your sex life? If so, it’s time to shake things up a bit.

Terri Orbuch, a relationship therapist, offers these five tips to rescue your sex life:

1. Let’s talk about sex, baby

Even if you’ve been married for 30 years, you can’t read your partner’s mind. You might be able to anticipate what your wife wants in her in coffee every morning, but that doesn’t mean you can anticipate which position she’s looking forward to later.

You have to talk about it, Orbuch says.

“When you do discuss sex, always focus on the positive. Instead of talking about what your partner doesn’t do to excite you, say what he or she can do,” she says. “For example, you might mention that you would find it extremely erotic if your partner initiated lovemaking or you tried a little role-playing.”

2. Change something – anything

Even the smallest change to your sex routine can spice it up. Skip the bedroom and have sex in the kitchen. Order a Kama Sutra book and try out some new positions. Try some lingerie, candles, massage oils – anything that you don’t normally do, Orbuch suggests.

New experiences can drastically improve your sex life.

3. Make a date – frequently

Orbuch, who is known to her clients as the “love doctor,” suggests scheduling sex. Many couples assume that this will take the fun out of it, but Orbuch says that’s not the case.

“What it can do is take the pressure off one of you to initiate and give you both something to look forward to,” she says.

“Additionally, having regular sex creates a positive feedback loop: Cranking the hormones leads to more desire, which leads to more sex, and more sex can have dramatic positive effects on a marriage. Couples who have done this report having more emotional intimacy and tolerance toward each other.”
