The potential damage that gum disease can cause extends far beyond the relatively narrow realm of oral health.

The link between oral health and erectile function may be difficult to see at first glance, but scientific evidence shows that men with gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, face a significantly higher risk of erectile dysfunction. In fact, a recent analysis of data related to the association between gum disease and ED underlines the importance of maintaining good oral health, especially healthy gums, to reduce the risk of impotence.

The research team that conducted the review was made up of periodontics specialists from academic institutions in India and Malaysia. They closely analyzed data developed from 10 studies conducted between 2009 and 2016. All studies focused on the link between chronic periodontitis and ED. Chronic periodontitis is characterized by a persistent inflammation of the gum tissue caused by large accumulations of dental plaque. While the most immediate consequences of gum disease include bleeding of the gums and possible tooth loss, it can pose far greater health consequences if left untreated.

Inflammation Can Spread Throughout Body

The inflammation associated with periodontal disease can and does progress into a broader systemic inflammation that can lead not only to ED but also a wide array of other systemic diseases. Such illnesses can include coronary heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes mellitus, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The Indian-Malaysian study, published in the July-September 2017 issue of the “Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences,” also observed that periodontal treatment is often accompanied by an improvement in erectile function.

Elaborating on the connection between localized inflammation, such as that seen in gum disease, and its spread to other parts of the body is a recent article posted at BostonMedicalGroup.com. The buildup of bacteria at a local site, as in and around the gums, causes inflammation that eventually spreads into the bloodstream, and the infectious bacteria are carried to other parts of the body. The article notes that people suffering from gum disease have been found to be twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease as those without gum disease and are also more likely to suffer a stroke.

Poor Oral Health Common in ED Patients

A more recent study, published in the “Journal of Periodontology,” looked at more than 150 European men diagnosed with ED. It found that almost three in four of the men also suffered from poor oral health. This finding prompted a warning from Britain’s Oral Health Foundation that poor oral health, if left untreated, can cause serious health issues elsewhere in the body.

Somewhat more pointedly, Nigel Carter, D.D.S., chief executive officer of the Oral Health Foundation, said: “In recent years, gum disease has been linked with conditions like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease, but an increased risk of coming up short in the bedroom may be the final straw for men who might have been reluctant to spend a little extra time looking after their gums.”

Men suffering from ED caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis usually get temporary relief from their symptoms by using Viagra or one of the other oral ED medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. These drugs can be purchased — with a prescription — at your local pharmacy or ordered online from a trusty online facilitator such as eDrugstore.com. If you don’t have a doctor’s prescription, eDrugstore can arrange a complimentary online consultation with a licensed U.S. physician who can authorize a prescription if appropriate.
