Don’t forget to mention any history of sexually transmitted diseases when speaking with your doctor about your overall sexual health.

Depending on a man’s overall health, he should meet at least once a year with his doctor — and more often if underlying health problems exist. And to ensure that his erectile function is maintained for as long as possible, he should talk about all aspects of his sexual health with the physician at every one of these visits.

Such discussions, of course, should include mention of any signs of sexual dysfunction, which might encompass not only early signs of erectile dysfunction but premature ejaculation and other such sexual problems as well. Men should also frankly address any relationship issues that may be causing problems in the bedroom. However, of particular importance is a subject that many men tend to avoid, namely their exposure, if any, to sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs.

Safe Sex Is the Best Strategy

Fortunately, safe sex can guard against most of these sexual infections, but it takes only a single incident of unprotected sex with an unfamiliar partner to expose oneself to one of these STDs. And STDs, the most common of which are chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, and trichomoniasis, can be difficult to cure and can cause lasting problems if not addressed quickly and comprehensively. Less common but even more devastating in their long-term effects are infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, and the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

Among the more common STDs, chlamydia poses perhaps the greatest direct threat to erectile function. Unfortunately, this bacterial infection can be asymptomatic in men. However, its symptoms, if they surface, can include a cloudy or white discharge from the tip of the penis and genital discomfort, most notably experienced as a burning sensation when urinating and as a dull ache in the testicles.

Chlamydia Can Lead to ED

Left untreated, which is easy enough to do when there have been few, if any, symptoms, chlamydia can lead to prostatitis, a bacterial infection that targets the prostate gland and leads to ED. Here’s a brief rundown on other STDs:

Gonorrhea: Another bacterial infection, gonorrhea is often contracted simultaneously with chlamydia. The former, however, is more likely to have symptoms, which are similar to those of chlamydia, including penile discharge and a burning sensation during urination. Both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be treated successfully with antibiotics.

Herpes: A widespread viral infection, genital herpes can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), although the latter is by far more common. Its most widely seen symptom is painful blisters in and around areas of sexual contact. But be warned that condom use cannot always safeguard against transmission of the virus. Lastly, because it is caused by a virus, genital herpes has no cure, but symptoms can be managed with certain medications.

Syphilis:  Caused by a spirochete, a long, thin, twisted bacterium, syphilis is a chronic disease that can be difficult to treat if not detected in its early stages. The earliest symptom is usually a painless genital sore or lesion, which eventually disappears. In its second stage, syphilis is most often characterized by a rash. The disease’s third stage may well be asymptomatic but leads eventually to a fourth stage in which syphilis causes serious damage to the brain, eyes, heart, and/or nerves. Syphilis is treated with antibiotics.

Trichomoniasis: Less common in men than women, this STD is caused by a parasite, although it can be successfully treated with antibiotics. If they occur at all, symptoms may include itching, burning, or a penile discharge.

HIV: Once considered a death sentence, infection with HIV today can be managed with medications that must be taken faithfully for the rest of your life. Failure to keep the virus under control can lead eventually to a diagnosis of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which leaves the body vulnerable to contracting a frightening array of opportunistic infections.

HPV: A widespread virus, the human papillomavirus usually targets men and women in their late teens or early 20s. The incidence of this virus can be sharply reduced through vaccination of both boys and girls in their subteens. Unlike HIV, the virus is usually much more short-lived. Most who contract the virus clear it naturally from their bodies within a year or two. However, if it persists, as it does in some patients, HPV can lead to potentially life-threatening cancers.

Men who do experience ED symptoms can usually get the help they need from Viagra or one of the other oral ED medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. If you’d like to order Viagra from the comfort of your home, consider using the services of eDrugstore.com, a longtime online facilitator.
