Men facing a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction have a limited number of treatment options to choose from.

For millions of men across the globe, Viagra has been little short of a miracle drug, allowing them to resume relatively normal sex lives that were cut short by blood flow problems. After all, compromised blood flow accounts for as much as 80% of all erectile dysfunction.

And Pfizer’s little blue pill temporarily optimizes blood flow to the penis, thus allowing nature to take its course.

But as with many good things, Viagra doesn’t work for everyone. It is of little help to men with ED that’s caused by psychological issues and in some rare cases may not work for those whose ED is vascular in nature.

What options are available to men when Viagra doesn’t work? One alternative method of treatment is the vacuum erection device, also known as the penis pump.

Devices Vary in Sophistication

These devices vary in their level of sophistication. While some are hand-operated, others use electric power to operate the pump. They generally consist of a hard plastic cylinder that fits over the flaccid penis and is connected by a rubber tube to the pump mechanism. At the base of the plastic, the cylinder is a rubber constriction band that can be slipped from the base of the cylinder to the base of the penis once erection is achieved.

The pump’s principle is simple. With the penis inserted in the cylinder, the pump is actuated to evacuate all the air from the cylinder. The resulting reduction in pressure surrounding the penis allows blood to flood in and engorge the organ’s spongy erectile tissue.

And voila, an erection! To ensure the blood remains within the penis until sexual activity is complete, the constriction band is slipped from the base of the cylinder onto the base of the penis.

While it’s undeniably effective when properly used, it can be a somewhat awkward way to get ready for sex. Far more discreet and equally effective for most men with vascular-related ED is the use of a tiny tablet that can be popped 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity is likely to begin.

For those who find that both methods work, Viagra seems by far the more preferable treatment of the two. However, if Viagra doesn’t work for you, the penis pump probably can get the job done.
