An American soldier who was injured in Afghanistan received the first penis and scrotum transplant in history on March 26, 2018.

Regaining erectile function

The unidentified patient was given a deceased donor’s penis, scrotum and partial abdominal wall. He didn’t receive the donor’s testes because it was deemed medically unethical, seeing that the veteran might be able to father children with the donor’s sperm.

The surgery was performed by two urological surgeons and nine plastic surgeons at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and took 14 hours. The procedure involved the transplantation of blood vessels, muscles, tendons, skin, nerves and bone.

As for whether or not the veteran will be able to get erections, the doctors are hopeful. The veteran will receive testosterone and an erectile dysfunction drug to encourage erectile function. The doctors also believe that they can restore near-normal urinary function.

How erectile dysfunction pills work

Erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, work by increasing blood flow to the penis so men can get and keep an erection hard enough for intercourse. Viagra usually works within 30 to 60 minutes and you only take it when you need it.

Most men find that 50 mg of Viagra works well, but the dose of Viagra can be increased to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg depending on effectiveness and tolerance. Men should only use Viagra once per day.

Although Viagra can be taken with or without food, it’s important to note that high-fat foods, such as cheeseburger and fries, can delay the effects of Viagra.

As with any drug, Viagra can have side effects. Some of the most common include headache, back or muscle pain, nausea, rash, dizziness, flushing, upset stomach, runny or stuff nose or abnormal vision. Most men who take Viagra say these symptoms are so minor that they continue taking the erectile dysfunction drug.
