A national survey of 928 men diagnosed with prostate cancer found that among their top complaints were dissatisfaction with their sex life (nearly two-thirds), sexual dysfunction (53%) and erectile dysfunction (25%).
These symptoms were often accompanied by psychological issues, such as not “feeling like a man” or worrying that their partner would leave them. Many of the men who were surveyed were happy with their medical care but wanted support in treating their anxiety or depression.
The onset of erectile dysfunction in men with prostate cancer
Although prostate cancer itself isn’t a cause of erectile dysfunction, its treatments can be. These include hormone therapy, radiation and surgery to remove the prostate gland.
In the case of surgery, a nerve-sparing technique may be used to decrease the chances of permanent erectile dysfunction, although erectile dysfunction may still occur the first two years after the surgery.
With radiation therapy, the most common long-term complication is erectile dysfunction, although there are more advanced forms of radiation that can decrease the patient’s chances of developing erectile dysfunction. These include 3-D conformal radiotherapy, seed implants and intensity-modulated radiotherapy.
Because hormone therapy works by reducing testosterone, it’s common for erectile dysfunction to start about two to four weeks into the treatment.
Viagra for erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer
Oral erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, can be very helpful in treating erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer treatments for many men.
Although men treated with hormone therapy don’t always respond well to Viagra or other erectile dysfunction treatments, WebMD reports better news for men who have had radiation or nerve-sparing surgery. In those cases, 50% to 60% of men who had radiation therapy will regain erections with medication and up to 70% of men who had nerve-sparing surgery on both sides of the prostate will regain erections with Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs.
