Study Finds Cialis Beats Viagra in One Particular Way

Researchers find that Cialis users have greater sexual confidence than men who take Viagra. The longer-lasting effects of Cialis may help to explain this apparent advantage.

Multiple clinical trials have proven that both Cialis and Viagra are extremely effective and safe in treating erectile dysfunction caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis. However, a careful analysis of data from those studies indicates that men who take Cialis or its generic equivalent, tadalafil, appear to have greater sexual confidence than those who take Viagra or sildenafil.

That review of existing studies comparing the relative effects of tadalafil and sildenafil, the active ingredients in Cialis and Viagra, respectively, was conducted by researchers at China’s First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. It was published in the October 2017 issue of International Urology and Nephrology.

A more recent study that compared the effectiveness and tolerance of Cialis daily with Cialis as-needed found that the former produced superior therapeutic effects than the latter. It also noted that men taking the daily drug experienced fewer side effects than those using the as-needed form of the medication.

Comparing Viagra, Cialis

The subjects of the first study, Viagra and higher-strength Cialis (10 to 20 mg) are both ED drugs designed to be taken as needed, usually 30 to 120 minutes before the anticipated start of sexual activity. Viagra usually takes effect within an hour, while Cialis as-needed can take up to two hours to become fully effective.

Viagra’s effects generally last for up to four hours, while those of Cialis as-needed can last for up to 36 hours. It’s possible that the longer-lasting effects of Cialis instill greater confidence in its users than the much shorter period of effectiveness offered by Viagra. In any case, the first study determined that both patients and their intimate partners preferred Cialis over Viagra.

The second study, published in the September 2019 issue of Sexual Medicine, focused on a comparison between the two different formulations of Cialis — one for daily use and the other for use as needed.

Daily vs As-Needed

The only significant difference between the two forms of Cialis is the relative amount of active ingredient — tadalafil — contained in each. The daily drug contains 2.5 to 5 milligrams of tadalafil, while its as-needed counterpart contains 10 to 20 milligrams of the active ingredient.

The versatility of Cialis stems from the extraordinarily lengthy half-life of its active ingredient. Half-life refers to the approximate time it takes for the blood level of a drug’s active ingredient to be reduced by half. Tadalafil, Cialis’s active ingredient, has a half-life of 17.5 hours, while the half-life of sildenafil, Viagra’s active ingredient, is only 4 hours, according to the Boston University School of Medicine. The other ED drug among the Big Three is Levitra, which has a half-life averaging 5 hours.

Strength of Dosage Varies

As previously noted, a dose of Cialis daily has roughly one-quarter the strength of a dose of Cialis as-needed. While the side effects of this and other ED medications are generally mild and short-lived, the lower the dose you take the less chance you’ll have of experiencing side effects.

With erection-friendly effects that last for up to 36 hours, Cialis as-needed clearly isn’t for everybody. However, for newlyweds and young men with a very busy social schedule, it could very well be their preferred drug. Cialis daily has the obvious advantage of conferring erectile function 24/7, thus treating the effects of ED around the clock.
