Staxyn vs. Levitra: Which Is Right for You?
Vardenafil hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Levitra and Staxyn, both of which relieve symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Your lifestyle and individual preferences will dictate which of the two is the better fit for you.
Of all the prescription impotence medications available to American men, only two brand names share the same active ingredient. While those drugs, Levitra and Staxyn, have a number of characteristics in common, each has some unique features that may make one preferable to the other depending on a user’s specific needs and preferences.
To begin with, both medications have vardenafil hydrochloride as their active ingredient, and both are members of the family of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, which also includes Viagra (sildenafil citrate), Cialis (tadalafil), and Stendra (avanafil).
Although all PDE5 inhibitors work in much the same way, individual variations in structure, onset of effectiveness, and duration of action can make one brand-name pill a better fit for certain users.
How These Drugs Work
Fundamental to any discussion of today’s new impotence drugs is an understanding of how they work. All these medications were developed to treat impotence caused by inadequate blood flow to the penis, the single most widespread cause of erection problems.
This means that none of the PDE5 inhibitors on the market will be particularly effective in treating impotence that is primarily psychological in origin. It is widely estimated that psychological factors account for 10 to 20 percent of all erection problems.
However, multiple clinical trials on each of the PDE5 inhibitors indicate that they are safe and effective for most men whose erection problems can be attributed to compromised blood flow.
Drugs Target PDE5 Enzyme
PDE5 inhibitors get their name from their unique ability to temporarily disable an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-5. The following explanation of the erectile process hopefully will make clear why holding the PDE5 enzyme at bay allows men to temporarily regain erectile function.
The initial impetus for an erection comes from feelings of sexual desire that arise in the brain. When such feelings are detected, the brain triggers a release of nitric oxide to blood vessels in the pelvic region. The nitric oxide sets off secondary chemical reactions, one of which results in the production of a protein known as cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP.
Importance of cGMP
The cGMP protein’s role in the erection process is key, because it relaxes the smooth muscles lining the blood vessels that supply the penis, allowing them to dilate and thus increase blood flow. This increased blood flow facilitates erection by filling up the spongy erectile tissue of the penis, producing an erection.
One of the primary functions of the PDE5 enzyme is to break down cGMP after cGMP has done its work. However, in men whose blood flow is already compromised, the enzyme can either prevent or prematurely end erections by breaking down cGMP before the protein has completed its task.
The PDE5 inhibitors typically hold the PDE5 enzyme at bay for four to 36 hours, depending on which drug is used. With the enzyme temporarily inactive, the erection process can proceed unimpeded.
Both Drugs Proven Effective
Clinical tests have shown that both Staxyn and Levitra are effective in temporarily optimizing blood flow to allow erections, but different characteristics of these drugs may make one a better choice for you than the other.
Setting Staxyn apart from Levitra and all other PDE5 inhibitors as well is its orosolubility, meaning that the drug can be placed under your tongue where it rapidly dissolves. You should never take the tablet whole with water, nor should you break up and chew the drug in your mouth. Staxyn is available only in orally disintegrating tablets of 10 milligrams each.
In contrast, Levitra comes in film-coated tablets of 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 milligrams. These tablets should be taken with water. The drug’s recommended starting dose is 10 milligrams. This dose can then be adjusted upward or downward depending on how effectively the 10-milligram dose works.
When to Take These Drugs
Both Staxyn and Levitra should be taken roughly an hour before you start sexual activity. Because it is orally soluble, Staxyn might have special appeal to those who like the spontaneity such a drug offers. Just pop a tablet in your mouth when romance is in the air. You can get the drug to work quickly whether you’re strolling along a sunny beach or hiking through the woods. You don’t need water to take the drug.
The onset of action for both these drugs is roughly the same, and both Staxyn and Levitra remain effective for up to five hours after the drug is taken.
As with all the PDE5 inhibitors, neither Levitra nor Staxyn is a cure for erection problems, but both offer the opportunity for men who have lost erectile function because of compromised blood flow to temporarily regain function. When the pill stops working, your ability to get an erection will return to what it was before the pill was taken. Neither Levitra nor Staxyn should be taken more than once a day.
Drugs Not Appropriate for All
As previously noted, clinical studies have shown both Staxyn and Levitra to be safe and effective for most healthy men. However, neither drug is appropriate for men whose doctors have told them that engaging in sexual activity may further threaten their health and well-being.
The drugs should never be taken concurrently with nitrate-based drugs, which are widely prescribed for the treatment of angina pectoris. Because both PDE5 inhibitors and nitrates lower blood pressure, taken together they might cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Staxyn and Levitra are not recommended for patients who are already taking certain other drugs, including alpha-blockers, such as alfuzosin, doxazosin mesylate, and tamsulosin hydrochloride; HIV protease inhibitors, such as ritonavir; the antibiotics erythromycin or clarithromycin; and antifungal drugs such as ketoconazole.
Common Side Effects
Common side effects of both Staxyn and Levitra are back pain, dizziness, facial flushing, headache, nasal congestion, and upset stomach. These side effects may disappear with continued use of either drug.
More serious side effects of these drugs include changes in color vision, a sudden change or loss of hearing or vision, and erections that last more than four hours. Although such side effects are rare, if they do occur you should seek immediate medical attention.
If you’re looking for a reliable online source for either Staxyn or Levitra, you might consider giving eDrugstore.com a try. In business since the late 1990s, eDrugstore is based in Tempe, Arizona, and sources all the drugs it sells from licensed U.S. pharmacies.
Because both Staxyn and Levitra are prescription drugs, you will need a prescription to order either drug. If you already have a script from your personal physician, you can fax it or scan and email it to eDrugstore along with your order. Alternatively, you can let eDrugstore arrange a complimentary online consultation with one of its team of contract physicians, all of whom are licensed to practice in the United States.
For an online consultation, you will need to fill out a questionnaire that covers your medical history, the drugs you are currently taking, and why you are seeking to purchase either Staxyn or Levitra. Your completed questionnaire will be reviewed by one of eDrugstore’s contract doctors, who will authorize a prescription if he or she deems it appropriate.
