Prices for Staxyn, the only erectile dysfunction drug that dissolves in the mouth, dropped by about 14 percent over the summer of 2019.
Unique among currently available erectile dysfunction medications, Staxyn is the only ED pill that can be taken without water, making it an ideal choice for men on the go. The orosoluble tablet, which comes in packets of four 10-milligram pills, can be popped into the mouth where it quickly dissolves, speeding ED relief to users in record time.
According to the Secure Medical price review, which surveys 18 prescription drug retailers, the average price of a 10-milligram Staxyn tablet dropped more than 14 percent during the summer of 2019.
Average Price Down 14.3%
In July 2019, the average price for a 10-milligram tablet of Staxyn was $41.44. By September 2019, the average price had dropped to $35.50, a decline of 14.3 percent.
Despite its unique orosoluble properties, Staxyn has not been a particularly big seller on the U.S. market, which is dominated by Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, and Cialis and its generic, tadalafil.
Based on GoodRx data, CNBC.com reported in May 2019 that Viagra/sildenafil accounted for 65 percent of all ED drug prescriptions filled between December 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019. A distant second, Cialis/tadalafil accounted for 30 percent of ED prescriptions filled in that period.
That left a rather meager 5 percent of the overall ED drug market to be divvied up by Levitra, Staxyn, and Stendra, the other PDE5 inhibitors available to U.S. consumers.
Competitive Pressures
Given its tiny share of the ED drug market, Staxyn’s price drop during the summer of 2019 is probably attributable to competitive pressures from its more popular competitors. Whether it will pay off in increased sales, only time will tell.
The active ingredient in both Staxyn and Levitra is vardenafil hydrochloride. As previously noted, Staxyn tablets dissolve quickly in the mouth. However, Levitra is like all other ED medications and must be taken with water.
Surveyed in Secure Medical’s monthly price review is a total of 18 major drug retailers. Fifteen of them are conventional brick-and-mortar outlets, including both stand-alone pharmacies and large supermarket or superstore chains that have their own pharmacy departments. The remaining three retailers in the monthly price review are online prescription drug services, which sell their products online exclusively.
Walmart Has Lowest Price
As of September 2019, Walmart had the lowest price for a 10-milligram tablet of Staxyn at $34.47. Only slightly higher was Costco, which was charging $34.77 for 10-milligram Staxyn.
