Anecdotal evidence indicates that men who carry cell phones in their front pants pocket face a higher risk of erectile dysfunction. No evidence has yet been produced to prove that emissions from the phones actually caused ED.

Erectile dysfunction affects around 30 million American men. Ninety-five percent of adult Americans have cell phones. Could cell phones be to blame for some cases of erectile dysfunction?

Of course, phones are blamed for all sorts of social transgressions, from distracting people at the dinner table to holding up sidewalk traffic while someone takes a selfie to put on Instagram. And there’s no denying that phones can disrupt romantic encounters. When a man (or his partner) refuses to switch off the phone (or at least put it in silent mode), the mood can definitely be ruined.

Two studies have raised the question of whether carrying a cell phone around all day can contribute to erectile dysfunction. Neither of the studies was large or comprehensive, but they both had some eye-opening results. Here’s what is known so far about links between cell phones and erectile dysfunction.

Unsafe Radiation Emissions?

The 2012 Proceeding of the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine included a report stating that men who have erectile dysfunction were 2.6 times more likely to keep their phones in the front pocket of their slacks. Though no cause was attributed, the theory is that keeping a cell phone in the front pocket may expose genitalia to harmful radiation emission from the phone.

It’s important to note that researchers did not distinguish among different types of phones, and one would expect different phone models to emit different amounts of radiation. Another problem is that mobile phones simply haven’t been around long enough for scientists to fully study any long-term health problems. Pocket-sized phones have only been around for about two decades, and smartphones have only become commonplace in the last 10 years or so. Nonetheless, the study is thought-provoking.

Study Cites Positive Correlation

Smartphones have only been in widespread use for a decade.

A study by researchers in Egypt and Austria recently identified a positive correlation between carrying a mobile phone that is switched on all the time, and erectile dysfunction. This study was published in the Central European Journal of Urology and tracked a total of 30 men. Twenty men who complained of erectile dysfunction for six months or more were included, as were 10 healthy men with no history of erectile dysfunction.

Study participants had no significant differences in terms of age, height, weight, smoking, testosterone levels, or exposure to known radiation sources. The men completed the German version of the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) and were evaluated under the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). The men also completed a questionnaire about mobile phone usage. Researchers found that the men with erectile dysfunction carried their mobile phones an average of 4.4 hours per day, compared with 1.8 hours per day for men without erectile dysfunction.

Further Study Suggested

Researchers don’t know what causes the difference in erectile function, though they think it might be caused by electromagnetic radiation or heat generated by the phones. There’s not much previous relevant research, though earlier studies have found that heat released from the batteries of laptop computers can affect sperm in semen samples. Studies have also tracked fertility levels in professional chefs, who are exposed to high heat of kitchen equipment for long periods. The next step for researchers is to try to tease apart correlation (the link between phones and erectile dysfunction) and causation (the factor causing erectile dysfunction in men who carry phones in their front pocket).

Correlation Is Not Causation

One of the first questions that arises after studies like the two cell phone studies is whether either implies causality. In other words, the question of whether the erectile dysfunction or the cell phone usage came first is a chicken-or-egg question. There’s as yet no evidence that carrying a mobile phone in the front pocket causes erectile dysfunction. It could be a coincidence, or there could be some other factor explaining the connection, like stress or work addiction. The studies have only shown that the two phenomena can occur at the same time. Until the correlation/causation distinction is made, there’s no way to say definitively whether carrying a phone in his front pocket can cause a man to have erectile dysfunction.

There are two trains of thought on whether men should change their mobile phone habits. On the one hand, the link between carrying cell phones in a front pants pocket and erectile dysfunction may be enough for some men to think, “Why take chances?” It’s usually not a problem to carry a phone in a shirt pocket, a jacket pocket, or a briefcase. On the other hand, correlation does not equal causation, and there’s no research saying that it is the presence of the switched-on mobile phone in the front pocket that causes erectile dysfunction in some men, and hence there’s no reason to worry about it until a causal effect has been shown. Right now it’s a judgment call.

Many Factors Can Cause ED

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many known factors. Men who smoke, are overweight, have diabetes, or have high cholesterol are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction. These underlying conditions can be treated, as can the erectile dysfunction itself, with drugs like Viagra. Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by psychological or relationship problems, and treating these underlying causes is the key to successfully treating the erectile dysfunction.

Men with identifiable causes of erectile dysfunction can often get significant relief by, for example, quitting smoking, losing excess weight, and getting cholesterol levels down. They may still require medications like Viagra, but Viagra works even better in a healthy person who has taken steps to address harmful lifestyle factors.
