The marketing campaigns of Viagra and Cialis have turned the taboo topic of loss of erection issues into a hot topic for men.  The makers of these medications have made millions of dollars selling their products to a growing number of men who have troubles in the bedroom. Right now these pills are one of few answers for men, but a new European product could be an alternative to the popular meds.

Apricus, a pharmaceutical company based in San Diego, is developing a new cream to treat loss of erection issues, or ED. The cream is called Vitaros, and is being tested by drug regulators in the Netherlands.

President and Chief Executive of Apricus, Bassam Damaj, said that the submission for approval is a milestone for the company and for men who are looking for an alternative to current remedies.  The drugs to treat erection issues do have side effects for some men, and can be costly. Damaj hopes this new product will give men more options.

Apricus will have to wait for the European Medicines Agency to approve the product and check its safety before it can be sold. The company plans to get FDA approval as well so the cream can be sold in the U.S. The company’s president is hoping Vitaros will be on stores shelves by the latter half of 2011.

Erection Problems is on the rise:

*More men are experiencing impotency because the baby boomer generation is getting older.  Every 7 seconds a baby boomer turns 50 years old.

*Awareness of the problem is increasing, which increases the number of men who are treated.

*Because, in the past, men have generally been unwilling to talk about their problem or seek treatment, erection difficulties has been underreported.
