Men with erection problems might have another new treatment on the horizon. Injecting stem cells to help repair damage to the penis is only in the clinical research stage right now, but so far the results are promising.
Although medications for erection health have a good rate of success in many men, some men don’t respond well to them, or can’t take them, for varying reasons. What stem cell research could offer is a reparative therapy that helps heal the damage or disease that reduces blood flow to the penis. Blood flow is critical for healthy erections.
Stem cell research has had its share of controversy, but those days are coming to a close gradually. Adult stem cells are becoming a bigger possibility. With those prospects, the human body could have more ways than ever to heal itself from diseases, physical damage, and other abnormalities.
With more research surely coming, what is known so far can give hope to men who haven’t found relief through any other means.
Dr. Zahasky’s Research, and its Results
In May of 2014, Urologist Dr. Michael Zahalsky gave a presentation at the annual American Urological Association meeting in Orlando, Florida. His presentation outlined the progress made with his stem cell research for treating men with erection health difficulties.
This was a small but important study of eight men, each of whom had erection problems, and none had experienced good results taking PDE5 inhibitors. PDE5 inhibitors are drugs such as Viagra and Levitra.
Although PDE5 inhibitors are effective for most men in treating difficulties achieving and maintaining an erection, they don’t work for everyone. And in cases where men take nitrates for chest pain or have other medication or physical contraindications, these drugs aren’t the safest option.
In Dr. Zahasky’s research, the eight men participating in the study were treated using an injection of amniotic stem cells directly into the penis. The results were stunning, as all eight men experienced increased blood flow to the penis when observed at one, three, and again at six months. Blood flow is critical for healthy erections.
What’s more, five of the eight men were able to achieve erections either on their own or with the aid of PDE5 inhibitors after being treated with amniotic stem cell injections.

Some History on Stem Cell Research for Erection Problems
Dr. Zahasky’s research wasn’t the first to investigate the benefits of stem cells for erection health. In 2005, Doctors W. Deng, T. J. Bivalacqua, W. J. G. Hellstrom, and P. J. Kadowitz had a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine’s International Journal of Impotence Research, . This study, “Gene and Stem Cell Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction,” focused on the special difficulties men with diabetes, non-nerve sparing radical prostatectomy, and high disease severity face with finding relief using PDE5 inhibitors. Many men with these issues do not respond to the drugs.
The researchers noted that the highest number of men who do not respond to these drugs fall into the categories of patients with diabetes, radical prostatectomy, and certain severe diseases. With gene therapy and stem cell treatments, they believed these men might find new hope.
This study was not conducted on humans, but on laboratory rats with diabetes and advanced age. The results showed that although there were difficulties narrowing down the best approach for creating the injection materials and with the rats responded to those injections, with modifications, the final results showed promise.
Although this was one very early study into the effectiveness of stem cells for improving blood flow to the penis, it was an important one. The researchers concluded that while the results in laboratory animals wasn’t final, it suggested that stem cells could help human patients find the relief that they need.
How Stem Cell Therapy Works
Stem cells are the most fundamental, and one of the most specialized, forms of cell material in the body. These cells are responsible for creating new cells throughout the body. They can create cells in the brain, bones, blood, and even the heart, explains the Mayo Clinic.
When stem cells are extracted for laboratory use, they can split and create what are known as daughter cells. Daughter cells may create new stem cells, or they may create new cells for specific parts of the body.

Stem cells may come from different sources. Nearly everyone with a television has heard about the controversy over using embryonic stem cells. But stem cells have other sources, too. Adult stem cells are found in adult tissue such as bone marrow and fat, says Mayo Clinic.
Adult stem cells hadn’t been investigated much, because researchers believed adult stem cells were only capable of creating more cells just like them. But emerging research suggests that adult stem cells can also create cells that are unrelated.
In other words, stem cells from one part of an adult human can create cells for a completely different part of the body. The problem with using adult stem cells is that they are more likely to contain abnormalities than embryonic stem cells, according to Mayo Clinic.
After growing new cells from stem cells in a laboratory setting, the new cells can be injected into the patient to help repair damage or disease. In the case of men with erection problems, stem cells grown in a lab and injected into the penis can help repair the damage and help restore healthy erections.
Although stem cell research has come a long way, there are still years of testing and more research in the future. One day, men with damage or disease that impairs blood flow to the penis could find the help they need from a simple injection.
Not all men have a condition that interferes with the effectiveness of PDE5 inhibitors. In fact, the majority of men who take medications such as Cialis, Stenrda, and Staxyn respond well to them. Blood flow is improved, and erections improve along with it.
If you’re just beginning to research erection problems and erection health, chances are good that one of the PDE5 inhibitor medications will work for you. There are certain men who shouldn’t take them, however.
Men who take nitrated for chest pain could experience a rapid and unsafe drop in blood pressure. And men with certain health conditions or damage to the penis might be at risk for unsafe side effects when taking any PDE5 inhibitor. You should always tell your doctor about all health conditions and medications that you take.
