Highlights

  • Alcohol-induced temporary erectile dysfunction is real.
  • Alcohol slows down your central nervous system, hampering communication between your brain and your penis.
  • Your temporary ED should go away as soon as you sober up.
  • Long-term alcohol consumption can cause many health problems, including persistent ED.

Drinking too much before a sexual encounter is not a good idea. In moderate amounts, alcohol may lift inhibitions and lighten the mood. It can also increase sexual desire and eliminate performance anxiety. Have one too many drinks, however, and you may find yourself unable to get it up.

Regular alcohol consumption can devastate your sex life. America’s favorite poison can, however, play a trick on your brain (and hence, your erections) even if you only drink once or twice a year.

Whether you drink regularly or are more of a binge drinker, chances are good that you will eventually experience temporary ED.

How Does Alcohol Cause Temporary Erectile Dysfunction?

Drunkenness affects your erections in three major ways. Bear in mind, however, that the long-term effects of alcohol are further-reaching and can be far deeper.

Alcohol interferes with your central nervous system

Your central nervous system (CNS) has two main components: your brain and spinal cord. They work together to translate images and various sensations into signals that trigger increased blood flow to your penis to produce an erection.

Alcohol is a depressant, which slows down your CNS and can disrupt the process that generates erections. Here’s how to know if alcohol has begun impairing your CNS functioning:

  • Your thinking and reasoning slow down and misfire.
  • Your reaction times expand.
  • Your coordination goes haywire.
  • Your motor skills suffer.

In a word: You’re drunk.

If you have participated in booze-fueled parties more than a few times, you know that there are different levels of inebriation. The more alcohol you drink, the more impaired your CNS becomes and the more likely that you will suffer a bout of temporary ED.

Alcohol causes dehydration

In addition to messing with your nervous system, alcohol drives the water out of your body through frequent urination. When you’re dehydrated, the volume of blood in your body drops. With less blood to go around, your body finds it more difficult to send enough of it to your penis to trigger and sustain an erection.

Alcohol interferes with hormones and neurotransmitters

When you drink to excess, you wreak havoc on your neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters regulate many bodily functions, such as sleep, stress, pleasure, etc.

Alcohol interferes with the action of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. It can make you doze off unexpectedly. Under its influence, instead of getting busy when aroused, you may fall asleep.

On the hormonal level, alcohol consumption promotes the release of a hormone called angiotensin II into the bloodstream, which has also been found to encourage alcohol consumption.

To make matters worse, scientists have known for some time that there’s a link between ED and hypertension (high blood pressure), and angiotensin II may be that link. Angiotensin II may be an early symptom of hypertension, and hypertension has long been associated with erectile dysfunction.

Bottom line? This hormone can hit your erectile function with a double-whammy when combined with alcohol.

If I Stop Drinking, Will My ED Go Away?

If your ED is a result of alcohol alone, it should resolve on its own when you sober up. Unlike persistent erectile dysfunction, temporary erectile dysfunction is a result of the momentary effects of alcohol. When these effects wear off, you should regain your ability to get it up.

If you don’t, you’re not dealing with temporary ED.

How Long Will It Last?

Your alcohol-induced temporary ED will last about as long as it takes your liver to metabolize the alcohol and eliminate it from your body in the form of water and carbon dioxide. That depends on the amount of alcohol you had, whether you ingested alcohol on an empty stomach, your body weight, and your tolerance for alcohol.

How Much Can I Drink Without Getting Temporary ED?

Your alcohol tolerance defines how much you can drink before your CNS throws in the towel. Once that happens, it is fair to assume that having sex will be the last thing on your mind.

The following factors influence the impact of alcohol on your body:

  • Your body composition and body weight
  • The number of drinks you’ve had
  • How well your body copes with alcohol
  • Whether you had anything to eat before drinking
  • How fast you chugged down the alcohol
  • Whether you drank water before or during boozing

Depending on your alcohol tolerance, you may become unable to perform sexually after just a couple of glasses of whiskey. Others may be capable of flying the flag at full mast after several bottles.

How Can I Drink and Avoid Temporary Erectile Dysfunction?

Avoiding alcohol altogether is the best way to avoid temporary ED. If you have your mind set on drinking, set some common-sense rules.

  • Eat well before drinking.
  • Mix in some non-alcoholic drinks with your booze.
  • Don’t chug down your drinks. Drink them slowly to make a glass last longer.
  • Never mix alcohol with medications or other drugs.
  • Once you reach a certain level of inebriation, stop drinking.
  • Stick to drinks with lower alcohol concentrations; try beer instead of scotch.

What Can I Do When I Get Alcohol-induced Temporary ED?

Don’t lose confidence in your sexual abilities. Your performance while intoxicated is in no way indicative of what you can do when you’re sober.

The only thing you can do is wait for your body to metabolize and eliminate the alcohol. If your ED is, indeed, temporary, you should be back in shape as soon as you are alcohol-free.

If you find yourself in a situation where you must perform while saddled with temporary ED, consider other means of satisfying your partner.

Can Temporary ED Cause Long-term Damage?

Drooping flag.

A single episode of temporary ED says nothing about your overall sexual health. If you find yourself struggling with temporary ED bouts often, you probably drink too much. Regular alcohol consumption can bring about persistent erectile dysfunction.

Alcohol-induced temporary erectile dysfunction is real, but it’s not much of a threat for a healthy male who can perform when sober.

The problems begin when you can’t raise the flag while sober or barely tipsy. In that case, your ED problems may no longer be temporary.
