TV, learning, reality, exercise, health, kidsHow many people these days have “shows” they watch on specific nights? I can say I don’t know many people who don’t dictate their lives around what’s on TV. It’s a shame. I hear more and more folks discussing what happened last night on Dancing with Stars than I hear discussing their kid’s football game.

Here we are trying to teach our children to go outside to play and enjoy nature more instead of sitting in front of MTV or playing constant video games and yet that’s all the adults are doing too.

Only instead of wasting our time on invigorating and mentally challenging role play games, we’re watching to see what type of train wreck Snooki will be tonight. The real question is; why do we care?

Real Life is Cooler

It’s sad that more people don’t honestly see anything wrong with their lifestyle. Not only are they setting a bad example for our youth, but they are killing their brains, literally. When watching TV, most of our creativity and creative planning shuts down. We basically go into “standby” mode. As if that’s not bad enough, we tend to eat unhealthy foods and not burn calories when rooted to our couch. Even doing squats during the commercial break can’t save you now. Not only is obesity in the United States a problem but childhood bullying, unhappy marriages and depression also run rampant. If we would just devote ourselves to making a few healthy lifestyle changes, most of these issues would resolve in time.

What happened to families gathering around after dinner time to talk to each other or engage in some sort of family project? I never involved myself in many family activities when I was growing up, but then again, I didn’t have much choice. My parents would do the dishes and sit down to watch TV. I, on the other hand, would race outside to do tricks on my bike and play at the park, all the while knowing I was close to breaking the rules since it would be getting dark soon. Those are fond memories. Will our children grow up and not have fond memories or any memories at all? Doing activities where you must engage in conversation or activity with a peer is so much more stimulating than waiting on your online friend to sign into the final fight on the game you are playing. Kids need to get skateboards, not play skateboarding games online. This all starts with society and the people in it being lazy. Get up and do something today before reality TV and reality games become the only reality you know.
