Something has changed in America’s sexual behaviors in recent years — researchers have noticed that people are not as keen to jump between the sheets. And if they do, they don’t necessarily follow the tried and tested ways to make love. A new study sheds light on recent sexual behavior trends of modern Americans.
New Study on Sexual Behavior in the United States
To understand people’s sexual habits, experts from Indiana University analyzed answers from over 2500 participants of the 2021 National Survey of Sexual Wellbeing. People selected for the study were over 18 years old and formed a representative sample of the American population.
Researchers admit, however, that they did not have a representative sample of respondents from the LGBT+ community. This means the study results are more relevant to heterosexual behaviors.
Kissing and Intercourse Are Still In
At first glance, our bedroom habits don’t seem to have evolved much. Most women and men said they kiss, cuddle, have penetrative intercourse, and enjoy manual stimulation.
There was a noticeable difference between genders when it comes to oral pleasure, however, with women receiving less of it. The study didn’t go into detail about why this is happening.
The authors of the report found a link between receiving oral stimulation and higher levels of satisfaction for both genders. Clearly, women are not getting enough of what could make them happy in the bedroom.
Cuddling is one of the most popular intimate activities
Other popular sexual activities mentioned in the study include rubbing of genitals together (known as dry or wet humping), using vibrators, and anal sex.
Shifting Sexual Preferences
The report brought some surprising statistics about young Americans. Contrary to popular belief, intercourse isn’t a top choice anymore for 18 to 24-year-olds!
Only 69.8 percent of women and 77.5 percent of men from the Gen Z generation reported having vaginal contact at their last sexual encounter, compared with 86 percent of women and 84 percent of men aged 40 to 49.
We tend to think that young adults are hormone-filled sex machines, but according to research, they love to cuddle and kiss. More than 90 percent of women and men in their twenties said they had kissed during intimacy. For people in their forties, those numbers were much lower – approximately 74 percent for women and 80 percent for men.
Newly Trending Sexual Behaviors
Even though traditional forms of sexual fulfillment are still popular, Americans are also open to novelty. At least one in ten men and a higher percentage of women admitted to using vibrators during their last intimate contact with a partner. This number may not be shockingly high, but it shows that sex toys are becoming increasingly common in partnered sex, not just as tools of solo pleasure.
Couples are discovering vibrators in partnered sex
Anal sex remains a niche activity, with 3.2 percent of women and 5.5 percent of men reporting engaging in it during a recent intimate encounter. The practice may become more mainstream in the future, as younger people mentioned it more often in the study.
Another new trend, which may be linked to the growing popularity of pornography, is sexual choking. This is something that mostly men do, especially those under the age of 40. On the receiving end, it’s the young women who are being sexually choked. In the group of 18- to 24-year-olds, 35 percent said that choking was part of their sexual experience.
Researchers added that this trend should be monitored. There doesn’t seem to be a strong connection between choking and pleasure, but there are obvious health risks involved.
Making It All Work: How To Have Better Sex
There’s no one formula for good sex in couples, but clearly, novelty is not something we should pursue at all costs. Perfecting the way we make love is more about listening and communicating our wishes and boundaries.
Here’s what to keep in mind if you want to have more fun between the sheets:
- Kiss her — a lot! Kissing can be a sign of romantic love, but for women, it’s also a prelude to more sexual satisfaction. According to this study, kissing was a predictor of women’s pleasure — all the more reason to kiss her with passion!
- Add a little vibe. Vaginal intercourse is a great way to bond as a couple, but most women don’t climax from penetration alone.
