The average prices for Levitra and its generic equivalent in October were up only slightly from September. However, the changes from July were far more dramatic.
Levitra was second only to Viagra to reach the U.S. market for erectile dysfunction drugs. It debuted in 2003, five years after Pfizer’s little blue pill made its bow and revolutionized the treatment of male impotence.
Vardenafil hydrochloride is both the active ingredient in Levitra and the name under which Levitra’s generic equivalent is marketed. Vardenafil, as a generic alternative to Levitra, was introduced in November 2018.
Designed for Use on Demand
Like Viagra and most other ED drugs, Levitra and vardenafil are designed to be used on-demand, or shortly before the anticipated start of sexual activity. And like their competitors, Levitra and vardenafil will not produce an instant erection. Rather, they work to improve blood flow to the penis, giving impotent men a window of time to get and keep an erection more easily.
Because Levitra and vardenafil have consistently trailed Viagra/sildenafil and Cialis/tadalafil in popularity and sales, average prices for Levitra and vardenafil have been running lower than those of their closest competitors.
Average Prices in October
The average price of a 20-milligram tablet (the highest strength available) of Levitra in October 2019 was $56.98, according to the Secure Medical monthly review of prescription medications. October’s price for Levitra was five cents higher than the $56.93 posted for both August and September but $6 lower than its $62.98 average price in July.
The July-October change in the average price of Levitra’s generic equivalent was even more dramatic, falling from $48.88 in July to only $21.21 for a 20-milligram tablet in October.
Levitra and Viagra Are Similar
In terms of both onset and duration of action, Levitra and vardenafil are quite similar to Viagra and sildenafil. Both of these brand-name/generic drug combinations tend to take effect 30 to 60 minutes after they’re taken. However, the effects of Levitra/vardenafil can last for four to six hours, slightly longer than the average of four to five hours for Viagra/sildenafil.
The average October 2019 prices of Viagra and sildenafil were $77.05 and $24.89, respectively, for a 100-milligram tablet, the highest-strength tablet available. This was considerably higher than the comparable prices of Levitra and vardenafil at $56.98 and $21.21, respectively.
Pill Splitting Is Popular
The recommended starting dose for Levitra and vardenafil is 10 milligrams, half the size of the 20-milligram tablet for which we’ve quoted prices. Because the price per tablet of these drugs is the same, regardless of their strength, many consumers buy the higher-strength pill and then split it in half to yield two doses, effectively giving them two doses for the price of one.
Given the current pharmaceutical market pricing protocol, it just makes sense to split pills when appropriate. Both Levitra/vardenafil and Viagra/sildenafil can be split, but that is not true of all prescription medications. Check with your doctor before splitting any prescription pill.
