CVS and Target had the lowest price for a 20-milligram tablet of tadalafil, the generic equivalent of Cialis, in September 2019. Their price of $21.83 was nearly 24 percent lower than the average price of $28.67.
Tadalafil, the active ingredient and generic equivalent of Cialis, is available in two formulations. The first, which was how the brand-name medication was introduced in 2003, is an on-demand drug that is to be taken 60 to 120 minutes before the start of sexual activity. It’s available in tablets of 10 and 20 milligrams and is the subject of this price review.
At lower strengths (2.5 to 5 milligrams), tadalafil is also available as a daily erectile dysfunction drug that ensures users will be ready for sex whenever the moment is right. Overviews of current pricing for tadalafil daily will be undertaken in future blog posts.
Average Price Was $28.67
Based on an analysis of data in the Secure Medical review of prescription drug prices for September 2019, the average price for a 20-milligram tablet of tadalafil was $28.67. But careful shoppers could find the drug at prices lower than that average if they looked closely enough.
CVS and Target pharmacies each charged only $21.83 for a 20-milligram tablet of tadalafil, 23.9 percent lower than the average in September 2019. CVS owns and operates the pharmacy departments in Target stores.
The price for 20-milligram tadalafil at Kroger and Publix was only 17 cents higher at $22.00, 23.2 percent lower than the average September 2019 price for the drug. The next-lowest price for 20-milligram tadalafil — $23.70 — could be found at four retail pharmacies, namely Meijer, Fred’s, Hy-Vee, and Winn-Dixie. Although that price was nearly $2.00 higher than the price at CVS and Target, it was still 17.3 percent lower than the average price for September.
About Our Monthly Price Review
Secure Medical’s monthly price review surveys selected prescription medications at 18 pharmacy retailers. Fifteen of those retailers operate brick-and-mortar stores that are either stand-alone pharmacies or supermarkets or superstores with full-service pharmacy departments. The other three retailers in the Secure Medical price review are U.S.-based online operations with no conventional stores as such.
The recommended starting dose for tadalafil on-demand is 10 milligrams, which is the amount that worked best for the largest amount of study participants in clinical trials. However, the price for 10- and 20-milligram tablets of the drug is the same. To get the most for your money and save on ED drug cost, it makes sense to buy the higher-strength tablets and split them in half, in effect giving you two doses for the price of one.
Not All Pills Should Be Split
While tadalafil and its brand-name counterpart Cialis are sold in tablets that can safely be split, the same is not true for all medications. Check with your doctor to find out which drugs can be split in this fashion.
Online pharmacies such as eDrugstore.com may charge somewhat higher prices for certain prescription medications they sell. But their prices include not just the medications themselves but some added-value services as well.
