Viagra’s Patent to Expire in UK

Viagra, the blockbuster pill created by Pfizer, will no longer have a stronghold on the erectile dysfunction market in the UK. As of June 21, the patent for the drug will expire, opening the door for generic equivalents.

According to The Guardian, Viagra use in the UK is on the rise, with 2.3 million men last year. That’s up from 1.8 million men in 2007. Reports indicate Pfizer will introduce its own lower priced Viagra on the market, in an attempt to keep some of its market share. Pfizer also plans to sell Viagra online directly to consumers.

Once the patent expires, drug manufactures can sell the drug under its generic name, Sildenafil. Plus, they can sell it at a fraction of the price. This could also force other pharmaceutical companies to lower their prices for erectile dysfunction medication as well.

While the patent in the UK has expired, the patent in the U.S. is still in effect until the year 2020. The current price for Viagra depends on several factors, but it averages about $25 per pill in the states.
