Boxed Warning: Metformin has a rare but serious risk of lactic acidosis, a medical emergency. Risk is increased with conditions such as renal impairment, sepsis, dehydration, and excessive alcohol intake.
Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, or history of hypersensitivity to metformin.
Common Side Effects: Gastrointestinal issues including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort. These often subside with continued use and are less frequent with the ER formulation taken with food.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Long-term use may be associated with decreased vitamin B12 levels. Periodic monitoring of B12 levels may be recommended.
