A cosmetic surgeon in California is generating some buzz with his new dieting patch. Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Nicolas Chugay has created a procedure where a patch is sewn to a person’s tongue to aid in dieting. It’s created a lot of debate among both patients and surgeons.

Patients try the patch

Erica Renteria wanted to lose a few pounds and decided to give Chugay’s so-called Miracle Patch a try.

“When I want to dieting because I have something important coming up I don’t care how I lose it,” Renteria told Fox News.

Chugay places a mesh patch, which is about the size of a postage stamp, on the tongue of this patient. It’s secured with six stitches and takes less than 30 minutes to do. The patch makes it painful for the patients to swallow or chew food so they’re forced to stay on a liquid diet.

“I’ve had patients lose as much as 50 pounds but most of them will lose 20 to 25, 30 pounds and be happy with that dieting,” Chugay said.

The Beverly-Hills based surgeon says it’s just a temporary fix; the patch can’t be worn for more than a month. The stitches are cut and the patch is removed.

Some don’t agree with the new procedure

According to the Huffington Post, Chugay’s patch hasn’t received FDA approval yet. While some patients say the patch worked for them, it’s created some debate in the medical world.

At least 60 patients have had this procedure done, according to Chugay.

“With any kind of thing you put in there and suture into the tongue, you run the risk of getting an infection,” Dr. Richard Chaffoo said.

“You’re going to be drooling a lot, it’s going to be really painful… You could get an ulcer, an infection. It could dislodge and go down your throat and cause an airway obstruction.”
