According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham in England, dieters are more likely to lapse on their diet due to friends, alcohol, and late night temptations.

For the study, researchers followed over 80 participants who were dieting. The researchers tasked the participants with tracking their eating habits and any temptations to lapse in their diet using a cell phone application.

The researchers found that the participants gave into diet breaking temptation over half the time. Additionally, they found that dieters were more likely to lapse at night.

The study also found that dieters were more likely to cheat on their diet when they were with their friends. Dieters who partook in alcohol were also more likely to lapse on their diet than those who didn’t.

“The findings help piece together the complex jigsaw surrounding the daily predictors of dietary temptations and help us to better understand how dietary temptations and lapses operate,” lead researcher Heather McKee was quoted as saying. “In the fight against obesity, we need to help people become more aware of the various personal, situational, and environmental factors that expose them to dietary temptations.”
