Epimedium brevicornum, a flowering plant from China, was recently the focus of an Italian laboratory study. This plant, also known as horny goat weed, was found to have the potential to treat erectile dysfunction. Results ot the study show that a molecule synthesized from horny goat weed targets an enzyme involved in blood flow to the penis more precisely than Viagra. Further, there is the possibility that this molecule could result in fewer side effects than Viagra.
Horny goat weed has a long history as an aphrodisiac. Legend states that the weed was discovered by a Chinese goat herder who noticed his flock engaging in sexual activity after eating it.
Further testing has been planned, including animal testing, to explore this possible alternative to Viagra.
