All the modern marvels of technology have not landed researchers any closer to a cure for the common cold.  This time of year, a cold is just about inevitable for everyone.  Winter brings chilly temperatures, dry skin, and cold and flu season.  When the initial symptoms set in, Americans stock up on tissues and over-the-counter cold and flu meds, and hope its short lived.  If you’re wondering how to fight a cold the old-fashioned way, in others words, without medication, here are a few tips to get better faster.

Blow you nose
Ok, this sounds like a no brainer right?  However, did you know there is a “right” way to blow your nose?  It’s true.  Place a tissue over your nose, plug one side and blow gently, then repeat on the other side.  Blowing too hard can hurt the eardrum.

Take a hot shower
The steam can help clear the sinuses and it helps relax the body.  Feeling a bit too dizzy to stand up? You can always run the water and sit down in the bathroom, the steam will do its work as long as you’re close.

Avoid sugar and milk
Here is a little known fact: sugar and dairy products are mucous enhancing products, so if you have a cold its best to stay away from these things.

Wash your hands
Yes, this tip is always makes the list, but you would be surprised the number of Americans that still don’t wash their hands despite repeated, proven tests that show how necessary it is.

Sleep
There is no better way to get rid of a cold than to help your body fight it.  By getting a good night’s sleep and resting throughout the day the body can work at attacking the cold.
