New England Patriots player Wes Welker isn’t making headlines for his actions on the field, it’s his hair that’s getting the attention. Welker admits he had a hair transplant in July. The wide receiver told TMZ he wanted to combat his thinning hair and decided on a transplant.
Welker is not alone. As men age, thousands deal with thinning hair. A hair transplant is one option, oral medication, like Propecia, is another.
Happy with the results
Welker says he is thrilled with the results. A Rhode Island doctor performed the procedure, which took five hours. Welker is reportedly so happy with his new do he’s agreed to appear in a commercial with Dr. Robert Leonard, the man who performed the procedure.
The doctor says Welker will start to see growth in about five months. Welker says there was no recovery time needed, he was able to wear his helmet and participate in practice.
Another option, Propecia
If a hair transplant seems a bit drastic, there are other alternatives to combat hair loss. Propecia, an oral medication, has been proven to stimulate hair growth.

Like many drugs, the power of Propecia was discovered by accident. Originally drug makers were hoping this medication would treat enlarged prostates and instead, found out this medication could help people grow hair. Propecia is said to alter a chemical, DHT, that leads to hair loss.
“It is DHT that shrinks or miniaturizes the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. This 60% reduction in DHT has proven to stop the progression of hair loss in 86% of men taking the drug during clinical trials,” WebMD stated in a recent article.

As always, it’s best to talk to a doctor about all of the options before making a decision.
