Younger Canadians Report Sex Isn’t Great
Younger Canadians Report Sex Isn’t Great

You may think of erectile dysfunction as an older man’s problem, but that’s not always the case.

Firstly, because erectile dysfunction isn’t necessarily an issue with all older men, and secondly, because younger men get erectile dysfunction too.

Take young Canadian males, for example.

A surprising study

Researchers at the University of New Brunswick surveyed Canadians between ages 16 and 21 to ask about their sex lives. But of the 400 people surveyed, three quarters of the young men and women reported less-than-stellar romps.

For the young men, the main issues were:

  • Low desire
  • Low sexual satisfaction
  • Erectile dysfunction

For the young women, the main complaints were:

  • Low satisfaction
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Inability to reach orgasm

The survey’s coordinator, University of New Brunswick Psychology Professor Lucia O’Sullivan, says that while some of the issues may simply be related the inexperience of youth, erectile dysfunction, disinterest in sex and poor satisfaction are more concerning.

“We have this image that partnered sexual life for young people is fun, pleasurable and really hedonistic,” says O’Sullivan, who chalks up the problem to a lack of frank sex talk from sex educators. “Nobody took on the task of saying that sex should be fun, enjoyable and a way to connect.”

Dealing with erectile dysfunction

As for the impotence issue, most young men aren’t going to head to a doctor to ask for a prescription for Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.

It’s more likely that many of the young males who suffer from erectile dysfunction will just avoid sex altogether or turn to unregulated food supplements that make unfounded promises of long-lasting erections.

These convenience-store finds are dangerous in terms of unregulated or undeclared ingredients, and have even been deadly in some cases.

A better bet is to talk to a counselor about sexual issues, as it’s more likely psychological than an actual physical problem for men between the ages of 16 and 21.
