Don’t count on sex to burn off all those excess pounds. But while it may not be a big help in losing weight, regular sex has plenty of other benefits.

If you’re trying to lose weight, you may be thinking that sex is a great way to burn calories.

It can be, but probably not as many as you’re hoping for.

Men Burn More Calories During Sex

A study from the University of Montreal looked at how many calories men and women burned during sex.

While men burned an average of 101 calories, women only burned an average of 69 calories. Why the difference?

First of all, men typically weigh more, so their energy expenditure is higher.

Secondly, men may be doing more physical activity during sex, giving them more of a workout.

Sex in Study Was Longer Than Average

Unfortunately, that study may not be a good gauge to measure how many calories you’ll burn during sex. In that study, the average length of the interaction was 25 minutes (including foreplay). But that’s much longer than average.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the average round of intercourse lasts just six minutes. (To be fair though, that six minutes doesn’t include foreplay.)

Another problem with the study is that the average age for the people in the University of Montreal study was 23. Obviously, younger couples are probably going to have more “active” sex than, say, a couple in their 70s.

As a general rule of thumb, if you’re on top, breathing hard and sweating during sex, you’re probably burning more calories than if you’re on the bottom and barely moving.

Sex Has Plenty of Benefits

Despite the fact that sex won’t necessarily burn enough calories to give you “before” and “after” photos, it’s still got a ton of great benefits.

It can boost your mood, help you to fall asleep, decrease your risk of cancer and other diseases, and reduce stress and anxiety.

If you suffer from erectile dysfunction and worry that you can’t have sex regularly, consider talking to your doctor about getting a prescription for ED drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. And once you have that prescription, you can travel to the local pharmacy and wait in line to have it filled or opt instead to order your drug from a reliable online facilitator such as eDrugstore.com.
