Don’t worry, you won’t exactly be on the fringe of society for using text messages to spice up your sex life.
In fact, sexting has become quite mainstream, with an Indiana University Kinsey Institute/Clue survey finding that 67% of 140,000 participants from 198 countries have done it.
That’s a big jump from five years ago, when an earlier Kinsey study found that only 21% of respondents had sexted.
“This increase, and this large of a proportion of respondents, suggests that incorporating tech into our private lives is becoming normal,” says Kinsey Institute Research Scientists Amanda Gesselman. “Sexting may be becoming a new, but typical step in a sexual or romantic relationship.”
SMS vs. Snapchat
Although most of the Americans reported sexting using SMS, younger respondents were more likely to have used Snapchat. The mobile app lets users send messages (including images and videos) that self-destruct a few seconds after they’ve been viewed by the recipient. Here’s the breakdown of Snapchat “sexters” by age group:
- Age 18-20: 43%
- Age 21-24: 31%
- Age 25-34: 16%
- Age 35-44: 5%
- Age 45-54: 3%
Sexting—by country
As for which countries sext the most (and the least), Asian countries tended to be more reserved.
Japan was the least likely to sext (only 34%) with South Korea close behind (at 30%).
South Africa was the most likely to sext (at 77%) and the USA was the second most likely (at 74%).
France (54%) and Italy (54%) were right in the middle.
When sexting doesn’t work
For men with erectile dysfunction (ED) that’s caused by something psychological, such as anxiety, depression or looking at too much porn, sexting may help you achieve an erection. But there are a lot of factors that go into arousal and sexting is certainly no cure for ED.
Something that does work for most men with erectile dysfunction is getting a prescription for Viagra.
