Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that afflicts many during the gloomy months of late fall and the winter.

The coming of spring brings with it a resurgence in plant life that has been dormant during the fall and winter months.

A similar revitalization is seen in the sexual energy and activity of many men that have been similarly dormant during the shorter days and dreary weather that is typical of the cooler seasons.

It’s not altogether clear what’s responsible for this resurgence in sexual desire and energy that accompanies the arrival of spring.

However, a number of factors may be involved. Research studies have found that men suffering from a deficiency of vitamin D are more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction.

And because the body makes most of its vitamin D from sunshine, it’s hardly surprising that the shorter days of fall and winter lead to lower stores of the sunshine vitamin with a resulting decline in erectile health.

You May Be Suffering from SAD

Many men — and women as well — suffer from the effects of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression associated with the reduced exposure to light that is characteristic of the fall and winter months. And depression, whether chronic or seasonal in nature, is hardly conducive to sexual desire, which for many men wanes during this period.

Beating the winter blues is not an easy matter, but a recent article at Healthline.com suggests that light therapy can be helpful. However, it’s inadvisable to do this on your own and should only be done under the supervision of a medical professional.

Other steps that can help reduce the symptoms of SAD, according to Healthline, include eating a healthy diet, regular exercise at your local health club or even at home, and a good night’s sleep every night.
