Things Said About Viagra When It Got FDA Approval 20 Years Ago

March 27, 2018, marks the 20-year anniversary of Viagra, the little blue erectile dysfunction pills that have helped so many men have sex.

Time magazine reports that when Viagra was first released, urologists were getting so many requests for the pill that many bought rubber stamps so they wouldn’t have to sign their name so many times.

In the earliest days, there were up to 10,000 prescriptions per day across the United States. Today, Viagra has made Pfizer at least $17 billion since its release—in the U.S. alone.

Commentary on erectile dysfunction and Viagra 20 years ago

The infamous Dr. Ruth was concerned that Viagra wouldn’t be much help if it wasn’t taken along with “an education process.”

Bob Guccione, the editor of Penthouse, predicted that Viagra was going to “undercut the feminist agenda,” by removing the pressure than men felt from being emasculated by the feminist movement.

Writer Gay Talese had another take on Viagra building the confidence of men. He said that the fact that so many men were rushing out to get Viagra was just proof that overcoming erectile dysfunction was “the key to men’s self-worth.”

Writer Camille Paglia encouraged men to “really re-examine” why they needed Viagra, warning that men with erectile dysfunction were “going to evolve themselves right out of the human species.”

Viagra today

Today, Viagra is the top-selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world. It’s also the most counterfeited drug in the world.

Viagra works for more than 80% of men with erectile dysfunction and is only available by prescription in the United States. Although it’s safe for most men, there are some men who shouldn’t take Viagra.

Men who take certain medications, such as other erectile dysfunction pills, nitrates, and poppers, for example, shouldn’t take Viagra. In addition, men with certain health conditions, such as low blood pressure or heart problems, shouldn’t take Viagra.
