Men concerned about their fertility should minimize their exposure to plastic containers and other products made with bisphenol A, or BPA.

A source of controversy a decade ago, the debate about the health hazards, if any, of exposure to bisphenol A, or BPA, is raging once again.

Triggering the latest concerns about BPA is a new study that found alarmingly high levels of the chemical in the urine of workers who handle it or are otherwise exposed to high levels of BPA in manufacturing.

This recent study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), looked at BPA levels in the urine of workers at companies that manufacture the chemical or use it to turn out other products.

They found that these workers had urine levels of BPA that were roughly 70 times greater than those found in the average U.S. adult.

Can Affect Male Sexual Health

The NIOSH study didn’t elaborate on the specific health consequences of heavy BPA exposure, but earlier studies among workers in BPA-related manufacturing have indicated that such exposure can affect male fertility. One such Chinese study found that BPA workers had decreased semen quality and motility, lower levels of the male sex hormone testosterone, and higher levels of self-reported sexual dysfunction.

BPA is used in the manufacture of some shatter-proof plastic containers for food and water, as well as the epoxy resins that are used to line the inside of metal cans produced to hold vegetables and other foodstuffs. Studies published in the early 2000s suggested that low levels of BPA appeared to be associated with an increased risk of various health problems, including diabetes, infertility, and obesity.

FDA Sees No Health Threat to Consumers

In a draft report released in August 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it had found no substantive evidence of health threats from BPA in food contact applications. In a series of periodic updates issued from January 2010 through November 2014, the agency reported that it continues to adhere to this position with regard to the use of BPA in food contact applications.

The FDA has pointed out that some of the studies indicating health threats from BPA were conducted only on laboratory animals, usually mice or rats. In an explanation of the agency’s understanding about the biology and metabolism of BPA, the FDA noted that primates, including humans, “effectively metabolize and excrete BPA much more rapidly and efficiently than rodents.”

NIOSH Focuses on Workplace Exposure

The NIOSH study was clearly conducted among adult humans but focused on the threat of workplace exposure to BPA rather than the exposure of consumers to the chemical used in food applications.

In reaction to the NIOSH study’s findings, Noah Sachs, director of the Merhige Center for Environmental Studies, said, “Every company that manufactures BPA or uses it as a raw material has a responsibility to workers to prevent such excessive BPA exposures. Business-as-usual is putting BPA workers at risk.”

Effects of BPA on Sperm Count

South African-based fertility expert Klaus Wiswedel, M.D., pointed to a study showing that men in his country had higher levels of BPA in their urine than men from the United Kingdom or the United States. He also noted that a Chinese study in 2010 found that men working in BPA-related manufacturing jobs had a sharply increased risk of both lower sperm counts and lower sperm motility.
