To stay abreast of the latest developments in his field, a doctor regularly reads journals that focus on his area of speciality. Most journals today are available in both print and online editions.

Affecting roughly 30 million American men, erectile dysfunction is very common, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. ED is also widespread in other countries.

Medical researchers devote their working lives to seeking out cures or improved treatment options for virtually all the known afflictions of humankind. The higher the incidence of the disease or disorder, the greater the research into it is likely to be. Tracking these ongoing research efforts are professional and academic journals specializing in various disciplines of medicine.

When a research team makes important advances in understanding the causes of certain diseases and disorders or finds new ways to treat them, such developments are chronicled in these journals, usually by one of the researchers. Given the widespread incidence of ED, a number of journals showcase these research advances, which in turn helps medical professionals who treat ED to stay on top of the latest developments. These publications are also of interest to men suffering from ED who are looking for information other than mere heresay and advertising.

Among the many journals that regularly publish ED-related research studies, these three are among the most highly respected and influential.

1. “The Journal of Sexual Medicine”: As its name implies, this journal covers all aspects of human sexuality and not just erectile dysfunction. However, because ED is a serious challenge to a normal sex life, it is the subject of extensive study. A recent keyword search for “erectile dysfunction” found more than 1,700 articles dealing with ED in current and past issues of the journal, which is the flagship publication of the International Society for Sexual Medicine. The ISSM, based in the Netherlands, also publishes “Sexual Medicine Reviews” and “Sexual Medicine — Open Access.”

While reports on research studies make up the preponderance of the contents of the journal, it also contains reviews. These are usually conducted by a team of researchers who review all scientific literature relevant to a particular topic to see what, if any, conclusions can be drawn from this entire body of study. This monthly journal has been published since 2004.

2. “International Journal of Impotence Research”: Founded in 1989, this journal is published by the Nature Publishing Group, which is headquartered in London. It focuses almost exclusively on sexual dysfunction, both male and female, and is published every two months.

Recent articles of note include “Hyperbaric Oxygen Can Induce Angiogenesis and Recover Erectile Function” and “An Initial Study on the Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation in Erectile Dysfunction: A Randomized Controlled Trial.”

3. “Urology”: Published since the early 1970s, this journal says that its mission is “to provide practical, timely, and relevant clinical and basic science information to physicians and researchers practicing the art of urology worldwide.” Urology as a specialty focuses on treating conditions that affect both the male and female urinary tracts and the male reproductive organs. As such, ED falls within the purview of the urologist and is a subject of keen interest. A recent search found more than 1,600 ED-related articles in the archives of the journal, which is published monthly.

If you suffer from ED caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis, Viagra and the other PDE5 inhibitors are the treatment of choice. If the convenience of ordering your ED drugs online appeals to you, check out what eDrugstore has to offer by visiting its Erectile Dysfunction page.
