Viagra, the prescription medication known for improving the sex lives of men since 1998, may benefit women after all. A new study suggests Viagra can relieve menstrual cramps.

Viagra as treatment for women

Some women battle abnormally rough cramps during menstruation. This condition, known as primary dysmenorrhea, or PD, is fairly common. The biggest symptom is usually pelvic pain.

Researchers led by Dr. Richard Legro, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Penn State’s Milton S. Hersey Medical Center, says vaginally-administered Viagra can relive the pain and discomfort caused by PD.

“Since PD is a condition that most women suffer from and seek treatment for at some point in their lives, our study offers hope that vaginal sildenafil citrate is a safe and effective option for patients who do not desire or are unresponsive to treatments now available on the market,” the authors wrote.

The results from the first study

Legro and his team asked 25 women with PD to participate in a clinical trial. Half of the women were given a placebo treatment; the other half was given sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.

All of the women were asked to rate their pain, according to Tampa Bay News. The women who were give sildenafil were more likely to have their symptoms disappear than those on the placebo.

Researchers hope further testing with provide more conclusive evidence about Viagra and menstrual cramps.

Further studies needed

Researchers aren’t sure why the drug worked. Originally, they believed increased blood flow was the reason, but that turned out to be untrue. It’s one of the questions researchers hope to tackle in the next clinical study. This clinical trial was cut short due to lack of funding, but researchers hope there is enough evidence to spark a larger-scale trial.
