Viagra’s most common side effects are mild and short-lived. High on the list are headache, flushing, indigestion, and abnormal vision.
Almost every drug, whether prescription or over-the-counter, has some side effects. For the vast majority of the people who take those drugs, the adverse effects are mild and often tend to fade upon continued use of the drug.
And so it is with Viagra and sildenafil citrate, the little blue pill’s generic alternative. Viagra’s two most common side effects are headache and flushing, “both of which are short-lived and easily treated,” according to a four-year review of the drug that was published in 2002, four years after Viagra’s introduction.
Recommended Starting Dose
The recommended starting dose for both Viagra and sildenafil citrate in the treatment of erectile dysfunction is 50 milligrams. This dosage works for most patients who are unable to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse on their own.
During Viagra’s pre-approval clinical studies, specifically Phase II and III studies, 21 percent of men taking 50-milligram Viagra on a regular basis experienced headache, while 19 percent reported flushing, according to data posted at RxList.com. The incidence of headache among men taking 100-milligram tablets of the drug was somewhat higher at 28 percent, while slightly fewer men — 18 percent — reported flushing. Interestingly, even men given placebo during these clinical trials reported experiencing headache (7 percent) and flushing (2 percent).
Indigestion and Abnormal Vision
The next two most common side effects of Viagra during clinical trials were dyspepsia (indigestion) and abnormal vision, which were reported by 9 and 2 percent, respectively, of men taking 50-milligram Viagra. Among men taking 100-milligram Viagra, 17 percent reported dyspepsia, and 11 percent reported abnormal vision. It should be noted that for most men taking Viagra, abnormal vision was mild to moderate, transient in nature, and consisted primarily of a temporary bluish tinge to their vision.
Other common side effects and their incidence among men taking 50-milligram Viagra were nasal congestion (4 percent), back pain (4 percent), dizziness (4 percent), nausea (3 percent), and myalgia or muscle pain (2 percent). In men taking 100-milligram Viagra, 9 percent reported nasal congestion, followed by myalgia and back pain (both 4 percent) and dizziness and nausea (both 3 percent).
What to Do About Side Effects
Although most of these more common side effects are relatively mild and transitory in nature, some men taking Viagra find them particularly bothersome. In such cases, it’s probably best to ask your doctor to switch you to another ED medication.
Of far greater consequence are a handful of side effects that are very rare but should be treated as medical emergencies if they occur. These include an erection that lasts for four hours or more, a condition known as priapism, and a partial or total loss of either hearing or vision. Left untreated, priapism could cause irreparable damage to sensitive erectile tissue within the penis, while the hearing/vision side effects could permanently alter those senses.
