Asking friends about their experiences with erectile dysfunction drugs can be awkward. However, checking out postings by ED drug users on online forums can sometimes be illuminating.

Introduction

Cautious consumers like to do their homework before deciding which product best suits their needs. This can entail poring through product reviews, asking friends and coworkers for recommendations, and looking at online forums to see what other consumers are saying about their choices.

Men who are new to the world of erectile dysfunction medications have the same sorts of questions, but they have fewer comfortable options. It can be awkward asking your male friends and coworkers which drug they prefer, and most ED drugs don’t have readily accessible product reviews. That leaves the comments in online forums, which can be helpful if you take the time to thoroughly review comments about a specific drug.

However, it can be somewhat difficult for newly diagnosed ED patients to fully understand all those comments without a bit of interpretation. This article spotlights some real-life posts about the Big 3 ED drugs — Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra — and supplies a brief discussion of each one’s significance.

Viagra — One Man’s Experience

In one online forum, a user named prettymuchjustadude recounted his first-time experience with Viagra. Dissatisfied with the quality of the erections he was getting on his own, he finally got a prescription for the little blue pill. Of his first dose, he writes: “Last night we tried it out and . . . holy smokes . . . ” The drug was reported as being effective after about 20 minutes. Even after three-quarters of an hour, he reports an experience of “Full mast” even in the absence of sexual stimulation.

He goes on to report that 15 minutes after having intercourse with his partner, he was hard again, and the couple had sex for a second time. He adds that a third round would have been possible, had time permitted.

Based on prettymuchjustadude’s account, the timing of Viagra’s onset of action for him falls within the normal range. Viagra usually becomes fully effective within 30 to 60 minutes, and his report of 45 minutes is right in the middle of that range.

Prettymuchjustadude also reports experiencing some minor side effects, all of which are pretty mild and tend to be of short duration. “I did get a slight blue tint to my vision” after an hour of computer time. He also reported a stuffy nose, and slight muscle ache the following day, but nothing alarming.

A More Serious Side Effect

In another discussion thread, user Trigsc tells of an uncomfortable experience a family member had while taking Viagra. “My grandfather took it and had the more than 4 hours experience. Got the old needle drainer at the hospital.”

The experience to which Trigsc refers is priapism, an erection that persists for more than four hours, a rare occurrence but one that qualifies as a real medical emergency. Data indicates that only about 1 in every 1,000 men experience this side effect, but it is something that all men taking Viagra should be aware of.

Cialis — When to Take the Daily Dose

Mad-carl, in a Cialis discussion forum, asks if there’s a particular time of day when he should be taking his daily dose of 5-milligram Cialis. The only drug of its kind, daily Cialis is available in doses of 2.5 and 5 milligrams and must be taken daily to ensure that the user is able to get an erection whenever the time is right.

The responses to Mad-carl’s query suggested that his daily dose of Cialis be taken anytime from early morning to late at night. A thorough search of online resources about daily Cialis failed to come with a recommended time of day. However, all sources insist that the pill be taken at roughly the same time of day every day.

So it’s probably best for Mad-carl and any other users of daily Cialis to select a time when they are most likely to remember to take the pill. If you already take another pill or two each morning, it would be helpful to take your daily Cialis along with those. That way, there is less of a chance you’ll forget to take it at all.

A ‘Chemically Enhanced’ Erection

The sex partner of a 47-year-old man taking Cialis said that he pointed out to her that his erection was “chemically enhanced.” Prior to being entrusted with his secret, she had been marveling at his virility and a more robust erection than she’d seen in an earlier boyfriend who was only 38. However, once she knew that he was taking Cialis, she began to feel insecure “that he’s simply having a reflexive physiological reaction because of the drug; that it’s not me turning him on.” She shared her concerns in a forum for questions women have for men.

The belief that Cialis or any other ED drug causes a spontaneous erection is fairly widespread among men and women who have never used these drugs or known men who’ve used them. None of these drugs will cause a spontaneous erection. You’ll still to need to get that the old-fashioned way. The only thing the pills do is to improve blood flow to the penis so that erection is possible.

Levitra — Different Strokes for Different Folks

In a posting at PEGym.com, user Dangler explains how he’s learned how to get more for his money when buying and using Levitra, which is also available generically as vardenafil hydrochloride. “I usually find that if I cut a 10 mg into two 5 mgs . . . that just the 5 mg is enough to begin ‘activation’ in about 50 minutes. Good for better than 24 hours, easily. I have only tried a 10 mg dose once, and there was not much difference.”

Although the 24-hour duration of action seems way out of line with what’s normally expected — 4 to 6 hours — with Levitra, individual reactions do vary. And the more sensitive one is to a particular medication, the less it takes to get the desired results and the longer those results might last. It’s always a good idea to try a lower dose to see if that works for you. If so, you can split pills and get more for your money. If not, at least you’ll know what dose strength it takes to get the desired results.
