Viagra may be knocked off its perch as the top ED drug.
Those familiar with Google Trends should hardly be surprised that Viagra was the top search term on February 15th, 2020, aka the Saturday of Valentine’s weekend. Viagra’s stronghold over this weekend trend has existed since the data’s been available. However, Viagra’s reign appears to be declining. Once quite popular, interest in Viagra has dropped in 2020, and it may be a sign of changes in the ED drug market.
What the Data Shows
First, a brief overview of Google Trends is in order. A “100” means the term is one of the most popular search terms for that day, and each point it drops reflects a drop in popularity. In other words, a ranking of “50” means the term is half as popular as the most popular search terms.
Viagra, represented by the blue line, generally held place in the 70-80 popularity score range over the last year, occasionally jumping to 90 or even the most popular search term.

In 2020, though, a distinct decline in interest becomes apparent. True, Viagra’s competitors (Cialis and Levitra) also struggled, and their generic names were generally low-searched in the first place. Still, Viagra took the hardest hit among popular ED medications.
Viagra’s Struggles
So, why is this happening?

Viagra’s decline could be linked to:
- COVID-19
- Patent pressure
- Price
COVID-19: It’s unlikely that COVID-19 has interfered with the sales of Viagra, per se. Both Viagra and the generic sildenafil, can still be prescribed by a doctor online. Instead, this may be a matter of priorities. ED can is linked to several health conditions, such as high blood pressure, that may be risk factors for COVID-19 complications. Fearful, customers might be prioritizing other aspects of physical health first.
Patent Pressure: Viagra has been available as a licensed generic since 2017. As of April 2020, however, Pfizer’s patent on sildenafil officially expired. This allows competition from other generics to enter the market. Patent expiry won’t make things any easier. One meta-analysis found that after expiry, a drug’s price generally sinks from 33% to 67%.
Price: Even as Congress is looking to drive down the cost of medications across the board, Viagra remains the most expensive ED treatment on the market. An analysis by eDrugstore found that while several generics have almost halved their cost in the last six months, a 100mg dose of Viagra has stayed largely stable in price. Currently, Viagra sits around $80 compared to $22.85 for a generic dose, a nearly 75% price difference.
