Research done through the Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO) project has found that erectile drugs, such as Viagra, appear to boost the effects of chemotherapy.

Viagra: Not just for erectile dysfunction

According to Dr. Pan Pantziarka, PhD, the research program director, Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs have multiple anticancer mechanisms of action at certain dosages. “In particular, there is evidence that these drugs target anti-tumor immune responses, as shown from a small number of early stage clinical trials,” he says. “This opens up the prospect of using these cheap and widely available drugs in combination with existing therapies to improve the number and duration of responses.”

Pantziarka says more clinical research is needed, especially in some of the hard-to-treat cancers, such as glioblastoma multiforme. Because Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs can alter the blood-brain-barrier permeability, they can help anti-cancer drugs treat brain tumors.

Many men have referred to Viagra as a “life saver” in the figurative sense, but now it seems that it may also be used as a literal lifesaver someday.

About Viagra

Pfizer’s little blue pill was approved by the FDA in March 1998 as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. In the weeks that followed, it was estimated that pharmacists in the United States filled more than 40,000 Viagra prescriptions.

Today, Viagra is the best-selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world. It’s also the most counterfeited, which is why it’s vital that men talk to their medical provider in order to get a prescription.

The FDA requires a prescription to ensure that patients are getting pure, effective ingredients. Men who resort to buying so-called “erectile dysfunction supplements” can be putting their health (or even their life) at risk, as many have been found to contain toxic ingredients, such as road paint, arsenic and detergent. If you want a legitimate treatment for your erectile dysfunction, get a prescription for Viagra from your doctor.
