Couples who are struggling to conceive may find hope in the findings from a recent study about the effects of Viagra and other male impotence drugs (PDE5 inhibitors) on male infertility.
Researchers at China’s Sichuan University analyzed data from 11 relevant studies covering a total of 1,317 men.
Their goal was to evaluate the beneficial effects if any, of oral male impotence drugs on sperm quality, quantity, and motility (the ability to move purposefully).
Findings from their meta-analysis of this data were published in the July 2017 issue of “Urology.”

On the downside, the Chinese research team found that male impotence drug use had no apparent effect on semen volume or sperm concentration within that semen. However, they did find that the use of PDE5 inhibitors increased the percentage of motile sperm, the percentage of total progressive motility, and rapid progressive motility. They also found that men using male impotence drugs increased their production of morphologically normal (normally shaped) sperm.
These significant improvements in sperm motility and quality were observed in infertile men only and were not found in normal men. The Chinese research team concluded that the use of male impotence drugs could lead to modest improvements in sperm motility and morphology among infertile men.
