Britons in need of Viagra and a morning-after contraceptive might soon have their orders for these medications delivered by drones. Following a successful test run, a major online pharmacy based in the United Kingdom, has applied to the General Pharmaceutical Council, the U.K. agency responsible for regulating pharmacies, for permission to begin using drones to deliver those medications to patients throughout Great Britain.
Based in the trendy Clerkenwell neighborhood of central London, MedExpress is not only an online pharmacy but offers telemedicine services as well. Such services allow consumers to consult remotely with one of MedExpress’s team physicians via teleconferencing technologies.
Trial Drone Run Completed
For its trial of the proposed drone delivery system, MedExpress dispatched a shipment of the morning-after pill under controlled conditions to Broadstairs, Kent. One of the biggest challenges facing drone delivery of medications is the maintenance of drug integrity and quality during the delivery process. In the trial, the contraceptive pill was maintained at temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius (roughly 77 degrees Fahrenheit) or lower throughout the process.
The transportation of medications at temperatures that are either too low or too high can affect the drug’s efficacy and might pose a problem in areas of extreme temperatures. However, the United Kingdom’s temperate maritime climate is ideal for such deliveries, as temperatures rarely go below 32 degrees Fahrenheit in winter or above 89 in summer.
Broadstairs, the delivery site for MedExpress’s trial drone shipment, is a coastal town in the Thanet district of eastern Kent, England. It lies roughly 80 miles east of London, where MedExpress is headquartered.
MedExpress Anxious to Launch Service
Dwayne D’Souza, managing director of MedExpress, said the company was extremely pleased with the results of the drone delivery trial run and is hopeful regulatory authorities will allow the company to provide this delivery system to its customers. “We’re confident our customers will love the idea.”
D’Souza said that the “rise of artificial intelligence, along with autonomous delivery and other sophisticated technologies,” allows companies such as MedExpress to experiment with new systems of delivery and other innovative forms of customer service. He acknowledged that getting all the regulatory approvals necessary to launch such a delivery service could take time, but he said MedExpress is anxious to get started.
Amazon Could Be Competitor
Ironically, one of MedExpress’s biggest competitors could be Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer. Although Amazon does not yet sell prescription medications, it’s been widely rumored that the Seattle-based internet giant has been actively investigating the possibility of adding prescription drugs to its wide array of product offerings. Amazon was also one of the first retailers — either online or brick-and-mortar — to express an interest in delivering orders to its customers via drone.
Amazon Prime Air, which has been exploring the possibilities of delivery by drone, has carried out many of its trial drone deliveries in the United Kingdom. If its parent company decides to begin selling prescription drugs, it would compete directly with MedExpress, although the latter’s range of prescription drugs is somewhat more specialized than Amazon’s likely would be.
Drone Delivery in Africa Slashes Time
The transportation of medical necessities by drone has already made significant inroads on the African continent, according to an article posted at VOANews.com. In late 2016, the Rwandan government launched a collaborative project with Zipline, a robotics company based in America’s Silicon Valley, to deliver units of human blood to remote medical clinics. Now urgently needed blood can be delivered from the Rwandan capital of Kigali to a medical center in Kabgayi in 15 minutes. Previously, a driver from Kabgayi had to drive to the capital, pick up the blood, and return, a round trip that took roughly four hours. Cutting the delivery time to just over 6 percent of what it was previously can make the difference between life and death for trauma patients and others.
Impressed by the success of the drone delivery system in Rwanda, the nearby East African country of Tanzania has contracted with Zipline to transport a variety of medical products to more than 1,000 medical facilities scattered across the sprawling country. The service is scheduled to begin in January 2018.
2,000 Shipments Daily
Under that agreement, Zipline drones will carry roughly 2,000 shipments daily to medical centers in every corner of Tanzania, a country that is about four times the size of the United Kingdom. Among the products to be transported are blood, vaccines, and medications to treat HIV-AIDS and malaria, diseases that kill thousands of Tanzanians every year.

Although drone delivery of Viagra and other ED medications is not yet available in the United States, you can get those drugs shipped to your front door via eDrugstore.com, a reliable online supplier of ED drugs as well as other prescription and over-the-counter medications. Based in Tempe, Arizona, eDrugstore is part of the Secure Medical family of online drugstores that sell only FDA-approved drugs, all of which are sourced from licensed U.S. pharmacies.
If you already have a prescription from your doctor, you can fax it or scan and email it along with your order to eDrugstore.
