The surgery
Earlier this year, Dr. Samuel Amanamah, a sexopathologist specialist at Kumasi South Hospital, and three other team members performed the surgery at the Peace and Love Hospital.
The surgery, which took about two hours, involved implanting a pair of bendable rods into the erection chambers of the penis.
Penile implant surgery leaves virtually no scarring because the incision is so small. There is no negative effect on fertility, so men can have children, assuming they were fertile before the surgery. For Dr. Amanamah, the surgery is a huge step for his country. “This was a dream come true,” he said, “that Ghanaians can now access this treatment in Ghana.”
Dr. Amanamah advises medical professionals to take their patients’ concerns about erectile dysfunction seriously, as it’s estimated that only a brave 10% of men with ED will seek help.
His advice for men suffering from erectile dysfunction? See it like any other disease, such as malaria or typhoid, and get professional help rather than just shopping around for the latest ED drug that may not work. Specifically, he warns men not to use bitters or other forms of aphrodisiacs to treat ED as they can cause serious health problems.
Treating erectile dysfunction in the United States
