Researcher inject hamsters with Viagra to treat jetlag.
Jetlag isn’t easy to fight, but a new study out of Argentina shows Viagra might provide a cure.

Study shows Viagra treats jetlag

Diego Golombek and his colleagues at the National University of Quilmes in Buenos Aires, injected hamsters with Viagra and then switched the animal’s light/dark schedule ahead by six hours, which is the equivalent of a flight from New York to Paris.

Hamsters that had a dose of Viagra switched their wheel-running routines 50 percent faster than those that didn’t take Viagra.

“If the drug does work in humans, it could be easier to use than melatonin, a hormone used to overcome jetlag that requires several doses to have a significant effect,” researchers stated.

Golombek’s hamsters only needed a single dose of sildenafil to adjust to new time zones, according to the study published on Nature.com. If Viagra can provide a solution to jetlag, it could decrease other health problems, experts say.

“When you disrupt the internal clock, you disrupt the synchrony among every process in your body,” says Lance Kriegsfeld, a neurobiologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

“When you’re jetlagged, all your different rhythms catch up at a different rate to the new time zone. They’re out of synch relative to one another.”

Other jetlag cures

A Singapore company recently conducted a survey, asking travelers how they beat the symptoms of jetlag and Viagra made their list as well.

Viagra is not currently approved by the FDA to treat jetlag. However, it is approved to treat erectile dysfunction.

“Our survey has shown that people will often try various methods in order to beat jetlag — but they may not work for everyone,” said Singapore marketing manager Ira Noviani at travel search site Skyscanner, which conducted the poll of 1,000 travelers.

The list includes light exercise while on the plane, sleeping pills and Viagra. The survey, which was featured on CNN, shows about 45 percent of people that took Viagra to fight jetlag said it worked.

Right now, Viagra is not approved by the FDA to treat jetlag.
