Hearing loss as a side effect of Viagra is so rare that it’s not entirely clear whether taking Viagra was a cause, or just a coincidence. Report any bad side effects of Viagra to your doctor, but don’t waste too much time worrying about hearing loss as a side effect, because it is extraordinarily rare.
In the United States alone, more than 5 million men have taken Viagra, the first prescription drug approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).
It has been on the market since 1998, and is taken by men throughout the world with high rates of success.
Viagra side effects have also been studied extensively. The most studied side effects have to do with sudden changes in blood pressure, and vision changes. However, in 2007, the US Food and Drug Administration required Pfizer, Viagra’s manufacturer, to label drug packaging to include hearing loss as a potential side effect of taking Viagra. A few studies have been carried out to date on this phenomenon.
How Frequently Is Hearing Loss Reported in People Taking Viagra?
Studies since 2007 across four clinical trials found 23 cases of reported sudden hearing loss in 60,000 patients taking Viagra. That is roughly 1 patient in 2,609, or 0.04%. A study on long-term hearing loss by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality collected data from 2003 through 2006 on 11,525 men over age 40. It found that men who took Viagra were two times as likely to report long-term hearing loss as those who did not take Viagra.
An association between long term hearing loss and other ED drugs like Levitra and Cialis was also noted, but the correlation was not as strong. It’s important to keep the numbers in perspective, however. Seventeen percent of men with hearing impairment use ED drugs versus 2% of men with normal hearing, so the actual numbers of men experiencing hearing loss while taking ED drugs was low.
Correlation and Causation
Another factor that enters into the study of long-term hearing loss and Viagra is simply age. Both ED and hearing loss become more common as men get older, so it’s possible that the association of Viagra with hearing loss is coincidental. The fact that the two conditions are correlated doesn’t prove that one caused the other. However, the studies done so far indicate that the FDA’s requirement for labeling Viagra with information on hearing loss was appropriate, and that men should be aware of the association between Viagra and long-term hearing loss if they plan to take the drug.
What Men Should Do
First, men should be aware of the correlation between hearing loss and Viagra use. They should also understand that the number of men in the studies done so far who experienced hearing loss while taking Viagra was low, and that researchers have not yet figured out if Viagra is causing these cases of hearing loss or if some other factor accounts for the correlation.
Men should only take Viagra on the advice of a physician, and they should take it precisely as directed. They should be aware of signs of hearing loss, such as difficulty understanding phone conversations, difficulty hearing in the presence of background noise, and persistent ringing in the ears. If these symptoms occur, they should consult their physician or schedule a hearing test with a qualified audiologist.
The decision to take any prescription medication should be an informed decision, with awareness of all possible side effects. Men should never take Viagra unless it has been prescribed by a physician, and they should be aware of which side effects they should report to their doctors.
