Obesity can contribute to low self-esteem and ED.
Obesity can contribute to low self-esteem and ED.
If you’re dealing with a little extra weight around the midsection, you’re not alone. A lot of men deal with excess weight, particularly as they age. Medical research suggests that added weight can cause erectile dysfunction, or ED.

However, a new study conducted in Australia, suggests minimal weight loss can improve penile health.

Weight loss, self-esteem and ED

The study suggests that losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight is enough to rev things up in the bedroom.

When obesity affects a man’s sex life, there is often a psychological side effect. Self-esteem can drop, which can increase the chances of overeating.

“Once ED happens it becomes self-perpetuating,” says Joel Block, an assistant clinical professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York City. “The more he fails, the more difficulty he has.”

Even if a man knows that ED is caused by obesity, it’s still depressing, says Kevin Billups, M.D., an associate professor of urology at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. “A lot of these men are down in the dumps” when they have to deal with both obesity and ED, he says.

Exercise to feel better

For many men, exercising and eating right is the answer.

“People need to feel good about themselves [to] overcome performance anxiety and other things in the sex arena, and sometimes it’s as simple as getting into shape,” Stephen Josephson, Ph.D., a psychologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital tells Huffington Post.

In addition to exercise, you should talk with your doctor about a prescription medication like Viagra or Cialis that can improve your ED as you work to get in shape. There are five FDA-approved medications that can treat ED. Your doctor will help you find the right one.
