A buzz is building around a new product that could be hitting the shelves soon: Viagra condoms. The new erection-enhancing condom product, could be introduced in Europe by the end of the year and then potentially into the United States.
How the new Viagra condoms work
Durex, a popular condom brand, will sell the new product after a UK biotech company, Futura Medial, created it.
Fox News says “the condoms contain a gel with an agent that boosts blood flow—a so-called vasodilator—which is absorbed through the skin, enhancing erections. Finding an active ingredient was straightforward—it’s a generic compound for the treatment of angina, a severe chest pain caused by lack of blood flow to the heart, but finding a way for it to effect the man wearing it was the clever part.”
“The challenge is having a stable product in a condom—a gel that doesn’t do anything detrimental to the condom,” Futura Chief Executive James Barder said.
“Some products can degrade the latex very quickly,” Barder said, noting that adding the vasodilator to the lubricant is complicated. “It has to be immobilized in the condom.” Most of the patents protecting CSD500 are associated with this “immobilization,” Barder said.
The difference between the condom and Viagra
The product does not claim to help men battle erection issues, like the pill form of Viagra, instead, it claims to help men keep an erection while having sex with a condom. This may seem like an odd distinction but marketers believe it will appeal to a wider audience rather than just the older clientele looking for stronger erections that Viagra typically appeals. Plus, if the condoms are sold as a medical device and not a drug they can be sold over the counter.
Potential consumers have positively weighed in on this product, making Durex believe they’ll have a winner of a product to sell soon.
