In a recent article posted at TheArabWeekly.com, writer Stephen Quillen reports that Arab world media claim the region has the world’s highest per capita use of these ED drugs.
Although sexual matters tend to be much more private in the Middle East than in other parts of the world, the region’s cultural norms place what may seem to be an inordinate importance on the male ideals of virility and fertility. And indeed polygamy is widely practiced in some corners of the Arab world, putting even more pressure on men to perform sexually.
Cultural Traditions
There is no evidence to suggest that ED is any more prevalent in the Middle East than it is in other parts of the world. Rather, the region’s cultural traditions set a high bar for male sexual performance, one that Arab men go to extraordinary lengths to achieve or exceed. As a result, herbal remedies with reputed aphrodisiac properties are also big sellers in the Mideast.
A study published in the December 2017 issue of the “Arab Journal of Urology” looks closely at the use of sex-enhancing medications among Saudi Arabian men. Roughly 40 percent of the 1,008 sexually active men participating in the study reported that they had used either an herbal remedy or PDE5 inhibitor at some point in their lives.
Researchers found that those who used sex-enhancing medications had a number of characteristics in common. They generally were better educated, higher paid, more likely to smoke, sexually active with more than one partner, had sex more frequently, but were less sexually satisfied than non-drug users.
