The average price of Viagra 100 mg was down only six cents from January to February. However, the average price of its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, declined more sharply, falling more than 4 percent.
The average prices of Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, were lower in February 2020 than in the month before. In the case of Viagra, the price for a 100 mg tablet dropped a very modest 6 cents from $79.93 in January to $79.86 in February.
The decrease in the average price of sildenafil 100 mg was more significant, falling a bit more than 4 percent from $22.85 in January to $21.92 in February.
Sildenafil Moves Steadily Lower
Far more dramatic was the downward price trend for sildenafil from mid-2019 to February 2020. Sildenafil’s average price fell 34.7 percent from $33.56 in July 2019 to $21.92 in February 2020. In fact, sildenafil’s average price remained on a downward path across the entire period.
By contrast, the average price for Viagra was strong at $79.28 in July 2019 but weakened somewhat through the end of the year, ending 3.2 percent lower at $76.71 in December. However, it roared back in January, jumping 4.2 percent to $79.93. Its 6-cent decline in February is so small that it can hardly be characterized as part of a trend, one way or the other.
Pfizer to Lose Final US Patent
In April 2020, Pfizer, which introduced Viagra to the world in 1998, will lose its final U.S. patent on its iconic little blue pill. That should signal the opening of the market to increased generic competition, which will have an obvious effect on competition in both the brand-name and generic segments of the market.
Under an agreement that Pfizer reached with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries way back in December 2013, Teva was allowed to begin marketing the only non-Pfizer generic alternative to Viagra in late 2017. For that privilege, Teva has been required to pay a licensing fee to Pfizer. That arrangement will end in April.
Pfizer Subsidiary Sells Sildenafil
Simultaneous with the introduction of Teva’s generic alternative to Viagra in December 2017, Greenstone LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pfizer, also began to market its own generic version of Viagra. So Pfizer has had contenders in both the brand-name and generic segments of the Viagra market.
Where prices are headed after the April 2020 expiration of the final Viagra patents is anyone’s guess. Pfizer has thus far held the line on Viagra prices, presumably betting that there will always be some consumers who insist on the brand-name drug. Whether it will continue to do so after April, only time will tell.
