Woman pushing a man away from her while on a couch.
In women, the most common form of sexual dysfunction is known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD.

Men enjoy a relatively broad selection of treatments for sexual dysfunction, including not just erectile dysfunction but premature ejaculation and failure to achieve orgasm as well. For years, women have complained that medical science is slighting them, offering them little help for their problems with sexual dysfunction, such as HSDD, characterized by a sharply reduced desire for sex.

A few years back, the FDA somewhat reluctantly approved a drug called Addyi (flibanserin), said to help fire up the female libido. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which was lukewarm consumer reception, Addyi never really took off, and the call for some sort of “female Viagra” continues. A new candidate — a topical cream — appears to be in the works.

Pivot Touts Topical Cream

Pivot Pharmaceuticals, a small Canadian-based biopharmaceutical company, thinks its topical cream, code named PVT-005, may be an answer to the problem of HSDD. The company specializes in the development and commercialization of nutraceuticals based on cannabinoids, non-hallucinogenic chemical compounds derived from marijuana.

Pivot has filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada for permission to begin clinical testing of its cannabinoid-based topical cream that it believes can increase sexual desire in women who seem to have lost it. While Addyi was designed exclusively for premenopausal women, Pivot’s topical product reportedly would work for perimenopausal, menopausal, and postmenopausal women as well. The cream would be applied intravaginally, according to Pivot’s press release.
